The disability community is full of special relationships. Ruth and Tammy are proof. ๐Ÿ’š

Ruth works at a cafe inside the Rhode Island State House. Tammy is her job coach.

They started working together eight years ago.

Today, Tammy says Ruth is a rockstar. She is hard working and makes awesome chocolate chip cookies. ๐Ÿช

Ruth says, โ€œI admire Tammy because she is a hard worker.โ€

Itโ€™s one incredible bond. Find them together at the West Wing Cafe! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Together, the organizations in this room support 12,344 people with disabilities.

Each person here is working to create a better future where everyone belongs. ๐Ÿ’š

Thatโ€™s why we got together to review our strategic plan.

So honored to be a part of this community and ready for whatโ€™s next.

People with disabilities are saying thank you. ๐Ÿ’š

These handmade cards are going to Rhode Island lawmakers for their investments in disability services.

They were created by our friends at Seven Hills Rhode Island.

To our lawmakers: Your support is impacting thousands of people every day. Thank you for building a state where everyone belongs.

People with autism can run away.

No warning.
No goodbye.
Gone in seconds.

Half of people with autism will run away at some point. Itโ€™s called elopement.

For families, itโ€™s one of the most frightening realities.

You may have seen the headlines about someone with autism going missing. This is the story behind it. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™

This is Autismโ€™s Hidden Crisis: Running Away.

On July 5, 1978 disability activists changed public transportation forever. ๐ŸšŒ

Known as the Gang of 19, they blocked Denver buses and refused to move. At the time, most buses werenโ€™t accessible. Their ask was simple: make public transportation available to everyone.

Their 24-hour protest brought national attention to the barriers people with disabilities faced every day. This also got the city to act and make its buses more accessible.

It started a nationwide standard for accessible transportation.

This also ignited a much larger disability rights movement that led to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What if Rhode Islandโ€™s disability community had a home?

A place where there was:

โ˜€๏ธ A summer camp for people with disabilities
๐Ÿ“ˆ Training to improve disability services
๐Ÿ’ผ Job opportunities
๐Ÿ’š and most importantly a place everyone belongs!

A planning grant from the Rhode Island Foundation is helping turn this dream into a real plan.

Recently, statewide leaders and local experts brainstormed ideas and dreamed of possibilities.

The idea is still early, but weโ€™re moving. We will keep you updated!

What would be your ideas for this community? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Rhode Island just passed a historic investment in disability services.

The House of Representatives and Senate have approved a state budget that funds a Medicaid increase for support for people with disabilities. ๐Ÿ‘

We now urge the Governor to sign this budget and finalize this investment.

Letโ€™s be a state where everyone can thrive. ๐Ÿ’š
