Could your child benefit from Occupational Therapy (OT) to be more successful at school, even if they donโ€™t qualify for school-based services?

At Sensory Kids, our outpatient occupational therapists look at the ๐™ฌ๐™๐™ค๐™ก๐™š child to build skills that support success at school, at home, and in the community.

School-based OT focuses on helping a child access and participate in their educational program. A child doing well academically might not qualify for school-based OT, but may still benefit from outpatient OT.

OT can help with:

Stay cool, Sensory Kids families!

With this Midwest heat wave, itโ€™s a good time to talk about interoception: the sensory system that helps kids notice body signals like feeling hot, thirsty, tired, sweaty, dizzy, or needing a break.

Some children may not notice these clues until they are already overheated or dysregulated. Offer water early, build in cool-down breaks, check in with simple body questions, choose shade or indoor play, and watch for signs of overheating.

Letโ€™s talk about the BOOM.

Fireworks can be exciting, but for kids with auditory sensitivities, the noise can feel overwhelming.

A little planning can make the 4th of July calmer and more enjoyable.

Prepared + supported = more fun for everyone.

Please help us welcome Traci to the Sensory Kids Team!

Traci is entering her 13th year as an OT and returning to the Iowa City area after serving as the Director of Occupational Therapy at a pediatric outpatient clinic in Pacific Grove, CA for the past year. She is the mom of 3 neurodivergent boys with her youngest having his own โ€œmedical miracleโ€ story. She knows first-hand the advocacy, education, and acceptance it takes to navigate such a journey. Traci is passionate about mind-body integration; the art and science of self-regulation; sensory processing and its impact on ideation, motor planning, and praxis; environmental design with aging in place concepts; therapeutic horseback riding, and gardening. She even rescues and grows orchids!

When summer rolls around, some kidsโ€™ nervous systems might suddenly start searching for input where they used to have it during the school year.

So this is your sign to get outside and soak up that sun ๐Ÿ˜‰โ˜€๏ธ
