Rural EMS providers are being asked to do more than ever before, and across Arkansas, the strain is growing.

In the latest Healthcare Journal of Arkansas, Arkansas Rural Health Partnership’s Camille Watson explores how workforce shortages, rising operational costs, burnout, and shifting healthcare demands are redefining the future of emergency medical services in rural communities. The article also highlights the leadership and advocacy of Pafford Medical Services and others leading the conversations around workforce development, sustainability, and the evolving role EMS plays in rural healthcare delivery across Arkansas.

Last night, Special Operations Team members responded to a report of a possible rescue near Emerald Park and Crystal Bluffs.

While the incident ultimately turned out to be unfounded, crews took advantage of the lack of city and street lights in the area to catch a quick photo in the glow of the red emergency lights. It provided the perfect backdrop before clearing the scene, one that also served as a quiet moment to honor our fallen brothers and sisters during National Fallen Firefighters Week.

LRFD LAWSUIT: Little Rock has joined a lawsuit that began in Montana over firefighter gear.

The lawsuit centers on “turnout gear” that firefighters wear. It alleges that for decades, manufacturers of this gear were aware it contained PFAS chemicals that have been linked to cancer, but did not inform cities or fire departments.

The Little Rock City Board voted unanimously to join cities like St. Louis and Baltimore in suing these manufacturers Tuesday night. The local firefighters’ union tells me they’re happy, as cancer is a real danger for firefighters and they’re for anything that helps fight that.

New plaintiffs can join the suit through May 5th- after that, it will proceed through federal court.

One late night trip and this is what we roll in with at shift change…

Apparently the bugs were running priority traffic too. We’re not sure what species these are, but we’re confident no forensic entomologist is going to be able to identify these monsters after impact.

At this point, we’re pretty sure they qualify as the Arkansas state bird.

All part of the job—different challenges, same mission.
