😶🌫️ Did you skip your SPF this morning just because it was gloomy outside?
It might seem like a no-brainer: No sun = no sun to screen = no sunscreen. 🤷♀️ It's right there in the name!
Unfortunately, up to 80% of UV rays slice right through clouds like a hot knife through butter. 😬☀️
Aside from applying SPF daily (rain or shine!), here are a few things to keep in mind to protect your skin year-round:
⊹ Your weather app likely has a spot for the UV index! If it's 3 or higher, SPF is practically non-negotiable. (It can hit 6, 7, 8+ on a fully overcast day btw, so... keep that in mind. 👀)
⊹ Your car windows block UVB but *not* UVA, so your face is getting hit on your commute (sunroof or not).
⊹ UV is at its strongest between 10am and 4pm regardless of cloud cover. Overcast at noon will actually hit ya harder than a clear, golden hour sky at 7pm!
⊹ Men are actually not immune to the sun. 🤭 SPF is for the guys too, whether your skincare routine has 10 steps or is just "the water that happens to hit my face in the shower."
⛷️🏖️🏔️ And, especially for those of you traveling this summer:
⊹ Sand, snow, and water all reflect UV rays right back at you. Double whammy.
⊹ Altitude affects it too. UV increases around 10% for every 3,000 feet of elevation. (Ski trips are particularly sneaky for this!)
Moral of the story: SPF is a year-round thing, not just a gonna-be-in-the-sun-all-day thing. 🤝
