๐Ÿƒโ™‚๏ธ Weak hip drive isn't just a performance problem...it can become an injury problem too.

When runners lack stability and control around the hip, several things can happen:

โŒ Pelvic drop

โŒ Excessive side-to-side movement

โŒ Knee collapse inward

โŒ Increased stress on the knee, IT band, and hip

The problem isn't just that these movement patterns look inefficient.

The bigger issue is that your body struggles to absorb force properly.

And if you can't absorb force efficiently, you won't be able to generate force efficiently.

Think of it this way:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Force production comes second.

๐Ÿšจ If your glutes aren't helping, your knees may be paying the price.

One of my favorite exercises for runners looking to improve strength, stability, and power is the **High Box Step-Up with Knee Drive**.

Why?

โœ… Builds glute strength through a large range of motion

โœ… Improves single-leg balance and control

โœ… Develops running-specific power

โœ… Helps improve knee alignment and stability

โœ… Carries over directly to hills, speed work, and stronger running mechanics

A few keys to doing it correctly:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Shift your weight forward onto the working leg

๐Ÿ‘‰ Drive through the entire foot

๐Ÿ‘‰ Keep your knee tracking over your toes

๐Ÿ‘‰ Avoid letting your knee cave inward

๐Ÿ‘‰ Control the lowering phase before progressing to explosive reps

Want to know why excessive vertical oscillation can slow you down?

Let's talk physics.

When you're running, your goal is to move forward as efficiently as possible.

But every time you bounce upward, you're spending energy moving in a direction that isn't getting you closer to the finish line.

A little vertical movement is normal.

Too much vertical movement becomes expensive.

Here's why:

โฌ†๏ธ 1. It requires more energy.

The higher you bounce, the more work your body has to do. That means more energy spent moving upward instead of forward.

๐Ÿฆต 2. It increases impact forces.

What goes up must come down.

Every extra inch of vertical movement creates additional force that your muscles, tendons, joints, and bones have to absorb when you land.

Over time, that can contribute to excessive stress throughout the system.

โšก 3. It can overload your calves.

Many runners with excessive bounce rely heavily on their calf muscles to propel themselves upward.

This can contribute to recurring calf tightness, muscle strains, Achilles irritation, shin discomfort, and other lower-leg issues.

One metric many GPS watches track is your Vertical Ratio.

This compares how much you're moving upward versus how much distance you're covering forward.

Generally speaking, the goal isn't to eliminate vertical oscillation.

The goal is to create a better balance between stride length and vertical movement so that more of your effort is being used to move you down the road.

Think:

โœ… Push behind you
โœ… Move forward
โœ… Stay quick off the ground
โœ… Avoid unnecessary bounce

Small changes in efficiency can add up to meaningful gains over the course of a long run, race, or training cycle.

Do you feel like you're bouncing your way through every run?

If your calves are constantly tight, you're burning through energy faster than expected, or your running buddies have jokingly called you a "bunny rabbit," excessive vertical oscillation could be part of the problem.

Vertical oscillation is simply how much your body moves up and down while running.

Now, some vertical movement is normal. In fact, it's necessary.

The problem occurs when too much of your effort is sending you upward instead of forward.

Think about it this way:

If your goal is to get from Point A to Point B as efficiently as possible, every inch of unnecessary bounce is energy that isn't helping you move down the road.

Excessive vertical oscillation can:
โœ”๏ธ Increase energy expenditure
โœ”๏ธ Contribute to calf fatigue
โœ”๏ธ Reduce running efficiency
โœ”๏ธ Make it harder to maintain pace over longer distances

One simple way to work on this is with cones, mini hurdles, or an agility ladder.

The goal isn't to jump over the obstacles.

The goal is to move over them while keeping your head level, staying quick with your feet, and maintaining forward momentum.

Focus on:
๐Ÿƒ Quick ground contact
๐Ÿƒ Pushing the ground behind you
๐Ÿƒ Staying light on your feet
๐Ÿƒ Minimizing unnecessary bounce

A good cue is to think about moving FORWARD, not UPWARD.

The less energy you waste bouncing, the more energy you have available to propel yourself down the road.

Every runner has that one cue that suddenly made everything click.

Maybe it was:

Sometimes a single cue can completely change how a run feels. Other times, the cue that works for one runner doesn't work at all for another.

That's because running form isn't one-size-fits-all.

The best cue is often the one that helps YOU move more efficiently, produce force in the right direction, and run with less effort.

3 signs you might be overstriding when you run ๐Ÿ‘‡

Overstriding is one of the most common running form faults we see, and many runners don't even realize they're doing it.

Here are three quick ways to tell:

๐Ÿ‘€ 1. You can see your feet in front of you while looking straight ahead.

If your foot is consistently landing far out in front of your body, there's a good chance you're reaching for each stride instead of generating force behind you.

๐Ÿ”Š 2. Your footfalls are loud.

Running shouldn't sound like you're stomping your way down the road. While some noise is normal, excessive slapping or pounding often means you're creating unnecessary braking forces with each step.

โšก 3. Every step sends a jolt through your body.

Do you feel impact travel from your foot all the way into your knees, hips, back, shoulders, or even your neck? That can be a sign that you're landing too far in front of your center of mass and absorbing more force than necessary.

Why does this matter?

Overstriding often:
โ€ข Reduces running efficiency
โ€ข Increases energy expenditure
โ€ข Slows you down
โ€ข Raises stress on the feet, shins, knees, hips, and lower back

Now, there are exceptions. Certain speeds, sprinting mechanics, terrain changes, and race situations can create what appears to be an overstride. But for most recreational runners, excessive reaching is doing more harm than good.

The goal isn't necessarily shorter strides.

The goal is better force production and having your foot land closer to underneath your body.

Most runners think the key to running faster is taking bigger strides.

In reality, that's often what slows them down.

One of the most common mistakes we see is runners reaching out in front of their body to try to cover more ground. While it may feel faster, it often creates a braking force with every step, forcing your body to absorb more impact and work harder to maintain pace.

Instead, focus on what happens behind you.

The best runners don't pull themselves forward....they push the ground behind them.

When you direct force backward, your foot naturally lands closer to underneath your body, reducing braking forces and improving efficiency. As a bonus, this can also decrease stress on the knees, hips, and lower legs.

Another mistake we commonly see is the "shuffle." Shuffling creates extra noise, extra friction, and often wastes energy that could be used to move forward.

A simple cue to try: focus on lightly picking your feet up and pushing the ground behind you rather than reaching forward with every stride.

Small changes can make a surprisingly big difference in your running economy.

Remember: don't try to change everything at once. Pick one cue, practice it, and see how it feels.
