This quote is a great reminder! A few days ago, I was feeling irritated about something. I don't even recall what, but when my partner had the sense that my irritation was being directed at her, unconsciously and sideways, she told me in a kind and direct way that she didn't like the way it felt and that she was going to leave the room for a while. I loved that she did that even though I immediately felt vulnerable and a little embarrassed. But it was great modeling for me for two reasons: One, that by her giving herself permission to take care of herself by not subjecting herself to my less than mindful emotional regurgitation, I was witness to a very graceful way of seeing how others set boundaries, and two, it reminded me that I too can practice that with others while also communicating my needs in a compassionate, clear way. ...And, by doing that she taught me how she wanted to be treated if we were going to spend time together. Good stuff!
I love this quote about setting boundaries. If everything is important, then NOTHING is important!
