5 Possible Reasons Your Heel Hurts:

1. Plantar Fasciitis
A ligament called the plantar fascia that stretches from the ball of the foot and attached to the bottom of the heel bone becomes inflamed. Pain is usually aggravated with initial weight bearing on the feet after a period of rest.

2. Fat Pad Atrophy
Normal fat padding under the heel becomes thinned out or pushed aside after repetitive and long-term weight bearing pressure on the heel. Pain is dull and feels like a bruised bone.

3. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
A nerve that runs along the side of the heel becomes entrapped and inflamed. Pain feels like a burning sensation and radiates.

4. Skin Fissures
Skin behind the heel becomes so dry that is leads to cracks called fissures. Pain feels sharp and aggravated when weight bearing.

5. Achilles Tendinitis
The part of the Achilles tendon that attached to the back of the heel bone becomes traumatized and leads to inflammation and possibly tears in the tissue. Dull pain is felt when the foot is flexed upward and aggravated when walking.
