Plasma is about 92% water, but some of what makes it medically valuable is found in a much smaller part.

About 7% of plasma is made up of proteins, including antibodies and other proteins that perform important functions in the body.

Rabies is nearly always preventable when treatment is started promptly after a potential exposure — but once clinical symptoms appear, the disease is fatal.

Each year, about 100,000 Americans receive rabies treatment after potential exposure.

That treatment can involve more than a vaccine. For certain patients, it also includes rabies immune globulin, which provides immediate antibodies against the virus while the vaccine helps the body develop its own immune response.

Specialty plasma donors help provide the antibodies needed to produce this important therapy.
