Body recomposition.
It's a term that gets thrown around a lot in the fitness world but I find that most women either haven't heard of it or don't fully understand what it actually means, but honestly it might be the most relevant goal you've never been given permission to pursue.
So let me break it down, because if you find yourself always thinking about or trying to lose weight, this will be huge for you.
Body recomposition simply means losing fat and building muscle at the same time.
Not one or the other. Both. Simultaneously. Fun fact,
this is actually the most requested goal I get on a client intake form. Most women donât know the term âbody recompâ they just know they want to âtone upâ and lose weight.
Now some of you might be thinking, isn't that impossible? Don't you have to be in a calorie deficit to lose fat and a calorie surplus to build muscle? How can you do both at once?
The short answer is yes, you can. For women in their 35s, 40s and 50s who are newer to strength training, returning after a long break, or navigating perimenopause, it's not just possible, it's actually the most logical goal you could have right now.
Recomposition doesn't require you to diet or execute heavy restriction with calories, no cutting carbs, or eating less than your body needs day to day. In fact it requires the opposite, eating enough protein to build and protect muscle, eating enough overall to fuel your training, and lifting weights consistently and progressively over time.
The scale might not move much. And that's actually okay during recomp.
Because what's changing underneath is your body composition is less fat, more muscle, and a stronger more capable body that looks and feels completely different even if the number stays the same. Your clothes fit differently. You feel stronger. Your energy improves. Your metabolism becomes more resilient. You also donât have to diet which to me is the biggest appeal!
This is what happens when you stop chasing a number and start *building* something instead. You lose fat, which takes up more space on your body, and build muscle, which takes up less space on your body and gives you a more âtonedâ appearance.
Recomp is slower than a crash diet, so I will be honest most women do not have the patience for it. It's less dramatic than a before and after photo taken 30 days apart. But it's real, it's lasting, and it doesn't require you to be hungry, exhausted, or miserable to get there. This I find, is key for my mid life ladies who have so much on their plates as it is.
It requires you to eat enough. Train hard. And trust the process long enough to let your body actually change.
I've been thinking a lot lately about how to bring this approach to more women in a structured, supported way, and I have something in the works that I think you're going to love.
For now I just wanted to plant this seed and get you thinking about recomp, so you can stop thinking about weight loss all the time.
You don't have to choose between losing fat and building muscle, in fact, you shouldnât.
