But learning how to use one can make a difference for a lifetime.

In Peru, our team is teaching kids how to build every day habits for a healthy childhood.

We spend a lot of time talking about surgery at GSF. This time, we’re talking about toothbrushes. 🪥

Oral health is an important part of comprehensive cleft care, but it is also an important part of keeping every child healthy. In communities where access to preventive oral health education and resources can be limited, something as simple as knowing how to brush well matters.

Our volunteers brought that knowledge, and 431 toothbrushes, to primary school students in La Esperanza, just outside Trujillo on Peru’s northern coast. The kids learned how to brush properly, why oral health matters and what they can do every day to keep their mouths healthy.

And no one left empty-handed. Each student took home an oral hygiene kit so they had the tools to put what they learned into practice.

Good health is built in a lot of places. Sometimes, it starts in an operating room. Sometimes, it starts with a toothbrush.

And 431 kids in La Esperanza now know exactly what to do with theirs. 🪥💙

Every three minutes, another baby is born with a cleft. Behind that number is a child who needs more than one good surgery to thrive — and years of care after it.

A cleft is treatable. But treating it well takes real skill, and it takes staying — through feeding, speech, and the years that follow. Reaching every one of those children, and seeing them through, is the work we're in. 💙

In Ecuador, more than half of children born with cleft lip and palate now receive surgery.

In much of the world, whether a child receives surgery still depends on where they’re born. Ecuador is different because of a decades-long partnership with GSF Ecuador and its dedicated team of volunteers.

Next month, we’ll be back in Ecuador alongside GSF Ecuador and their incredible team of volunteers to help more children receive surgery, strengthen local expertise, and continue building on that progress.

More than half is a milestone.
Every child is the goal.

When our team first met Dr. Mercedes Angeles in Trujillo, Peru, she was already caring for children born with cleft. More than 20 years later, she’s still doing exactly that, now as Chief of Anesthesia and a founding board member of GSF Peru.

Mercedes represents the very best of our volunteer community. Like so many of our surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, dentists, speech-language pathologists, and specialists who give their time year after year, she believes children deserve more than a single operation.

A child’s journey doesn’t end after surgery. Neither does our commitment.

That’s why our volunteers continue to show up for children and families, alongside one another and local colleagues, year after year. Together, they’re helping build something every child deserves: comprehensive cleft care that lasts.

Thank you, Mercedes, and thank you to every member of our volunteer community. Your commitment helps ensure that children receive not just surgery, but the lifelong support they deserve.

A cleft is treatable. What changes the outcome is where you’re born.

In one country, a newborn meets a feeding specialist in the first week. In another, the family is sent home to figure it out.

The surgery is the visible part. The years around it — nutrition, speech, follow-up — are what decide how a child grows up.

That’s the gap worth closing.
