Surgery can repair a cleft. It can’t decide how others will treat a child. 💙

Last week in Beirut, speech therapist Salma Jabre heard something no parent should have to tell her: their child is being bullied.

For some children born with cleft, the hardest moments don’t happen in a hospital. They happen in a classroom, at lunch, or on the playground.

Every child deserves to walk into school with confidence. To be heard. To make friends. To know they belong.

And that responsibility belongs to all of us.

Some of the babies we first met in Beirut in 2012 are teenagers now. And they're still coming back. 💙

Because cleft treatment doesn't end with one surgery. As children grow, their needs change. Some need additional surgeries, others ongoing treatment and follow-up care.

This week in Beirut, those teenagers are sitting alongside families bringing their babies in for the very first time.

Fourteen years apart. Each at a different stage of growing up. All deserving of the same quality of care.

Being heard. Finding their voice. Making friends. Walking into a room and knowing they belong.
Those moments shape a child, too.

Because the best cleft care doesn’t just change what’s possible for a child. It gives them the confidence to claim it.

Cleft treatment doesn't happen at one age, in one operating room, on one day. A child may have one surgery as a baby and another years later, as their face grows and their speech develops.

Around the world, too many children are left with a repair that still makes eating hard and words difficult to say.

But for a child whose repair is done well, there is more freedom to just be a kid. Being picked for the team. Getting invited to the party. One day, a first job.
The ordinary life every child is owed. 💙

Things most people don't know about cleft:

→ A baby with a cleft palate often can't breastfeed or drink from a regular bottle.
→ Ear infections and hearing loss are common.
→ Speech can be affected long after surgery.
→ Treatment can take years and may require more than one surgery.

A cleft is never "just" cosmetic. Share this with someone who didn't know. 💛

As from what we have we do not know, we can have it as:

Jordan's mom spent months looking for someone to repair his cleft. Then a friend told her about one of our volunteers nearby .

That's usually how it happens: the right help reaches a family through the people already around them.

Two months after that conversation, Jordan had his lip repaired, and his palate this September.

He's too young to remember these surgeries. What he'll know is the childhood that came after. 💙

Cleft feels rare. It isn’t.

About 1 in 700 babies is born with cleft. In the United States, surgery happens so early that by the time a child starts school, most people would never know.

But that isn’t true everywhere.

For millions of children, where they are born still determines whether they have access to the treatment they need. 💙
