This is very long, but I promise it’s worth it!

Everyone knows I taught myself how to tattoo, and I’ve never tried to hide that. But there’s one thing I can promise you—I didn’t teach myself by tattooing people out of my house.

There is a BIG difference between being self-taught and tattooing in an uncontrolled home environment.

You can clean your house from top to bottom, but clean and appropriate for tattoo procedures are not the same thing. Think about everything that happens inside a normal home—pets, kids, cooking, shoes coming in from outside, carpet and upholstered furniture, dust, bathrooms, dirty laundry, people coming and going, and everyday germs being carried from room to room.

Tattooing involves repeatedly breaking the skin, which means sanitation, cross-contamination prevention, proper barriers, single-use supplies, safe disposal, and a workspace that can be properly disinfected MATTER.

I’m not saying this because I think I’m better than anyone, and I’m definitely not saying you have to start out perfect. I’m saying that if you’re going to put a needle into someone’s skin, their health and safety should come before convenience or saving money.

Being self-taught doesn’t have to mean being unsafe. Learn. Invest in the right equipment. Create the right environment. Take sanitation seriously. And most importantly, respect the trust someone is giving you when they allow you to permanently alter their body.

A tattoo is temporary pain and permanent artwork—but an infection or bloodborne illness can have consequences that last a lifetime.
