Tomorrow marks eight days since Christmas, traditionally remembered as the Circumcision of Christ, now celebrated as the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. It’s a good day to talk about why His circumcision was markedly different than what is done to baby boys in American hospitals today.

Critical Differences:

🩸Original Levitical circumcision removed far less of the pe**le tissue than American/western circumcisions do today. According to the original command, only the very tip of the fo****in was removed and the epithelium was NOT peeled back to uncover the g***s. Now the entire fo****in is peeled back and cut off. Adult males circumcised in modern times are missing approximately *15 square inches* of ge***al tissue.

🩸His was a sacred religious rite that marked entrance into the ancient divine Abrahamic covenant. Modern circumcisions are cosmetic in nature or done under the guise of being “cleaner” or to reduce infections. (In fact, while healing, circumcision dramatically *increases* the rate of acute infection in a vulnerable newborn.)

🩸His was done eight days after birth. In hospitals now, most are done at a mere one day old, barely out of the womb. Remarkable to note that around 8 days old is when the baby’s body naturally begins developing its own vitamin K which helps clot blood. Ancient people didn’t know this but God did. His commandment took that into account. Doing it at day one or two puts the baby at greater risk of hemorrhage thus making a synthetic injection of vitamin K (with its own risks) more critical to preventing catastrophic outcomes.

Religious circumcision is anything but traditional Christianity. It is criticized by St. Paul, forbidden by the Church in the Council of Jerusalem in Acts, and forbidden again by the Church in the Council of Florence. The modern medical circumcision done in hospitals today is far more severe, traumatic, and introduces risks to newborn babies for no good reason.

His coming and His work on the Cross marked the *END* of ritual circumcision as necessary for entrance into the covenant of God.

His Blood was spilled so theirs wouldn’t have to be.

Homebirth isn’t the fad.
Hospital birth is.

Birth didn’t start in a hospital.
It was moved there.

In the last hundred years we turned a physiological process into a managed event.
Clocks replaced intuition.
Policies replaced autonomy.
Beds replaced movement.

Yes, hospitals save lives when things go wrong.
No one disputes that.

But the idea that birth must happen in a hospital for everyone, every time?
That’s historically brand new.

Maybe what we’re calling a “trend” is actually a return…

No matter what stage of pregnancy you were in, your baby mattered & your grief is valid.

I miss somebody I never even got to meet.

I didn’t get to hear their first cry.
Or feel their little hand wrap around my finger.
Or watch their chest rise and fall as they slept.

But I loved them just the same.

And that kind of love doesn’t just disappear…
It lingers.
In the baby clothes I never got to use.
In the date that still haunts my calendar.
In the silence that should’ve been filled with newborn sounds.

Losing a baby, at any stage, leaves a pain that most can’t see.
But for those of us who’ve been there,
We feel it every single day.

So if you’ve ever carried a baby you didn’t get to keep,
Your grief is valid.
Your pain is real.
And your baby mattered.

You don’t have to “move on.”
You’re allowed to remember.
You’re allowed to love them forever.
