🌿Staff Harvest Day at the Ancestral Healing Farm

Yesterday our Apothecary and Fruitvale teams came together on the farm for a harvest day and it was truly nourishing and rewarding to be on the land together.

Promotoras, apothecary stewards, program managers, directors, and even our amazing security guard came to support our farm co-coordinators in gathering sacred medicines to share with community!

We’re looking forward to sharing this harvest with you all soon!

🌿✨ We’re honored and excited to announce our partnership with Karen M. Rose of Sacred Vibes Apothecary & Botanica for a virtual community medicine making workshop and fundraiser for our Apothecary & Pharmacy + Community Medicine Making initiative as we continue to offer donation-based herbal medicine making workshops to our local community. Her wisdom and work has inspired our space and stewards since our beginnings so we’re grateful for her existence and willingness to share her wisdom with our folks.

On September 19th, Empress Karen’s Rose Healing Ourselves Wholly herbalism workshop will focus on the following:

We are more than our wounds. We have been gifted with resilience in our physical and emotional bodies that translates into our existence. Any healing approach without thought of these truths is malpractice. In this workshop, we will focus on the effects of generational/ancestral/historical trauma and how it’s held in our bodies and spirits. We will examine what equity in healing means. We will build our relationships with some of the plants that exist alongside our histories. We will reclaim the resiliency of our ancestors by sharing stories of ancestral healing practices and envision wellness as a community responsibility.

🌿Key Herbs:
• Mint
• Linden leaf and flower
• Chamomile
• Red Raspberry
• Oatstraw

There are multiple ways to engage in the workshop:

1. Apothecary Viewing — Join us in the apothecary as we watching the live workshop on zoom and make the medicine together. All materials will be provided. (Limited Capacity)

2. At-Home (Bay Area) — Drop by the apothecary to pick up the materials that we’ll be using for the workshop and take them home for a more personal viewing experience.

3. DIY (Worldwide) — Want to attend and pick up your own materials at your local botánica or apothecary? This option is for you.

4. Donation — Unable to attend but want to donate? We appreciate any support you can provide.

Blessed Monday Community! Over the weekend there was a break-in at the Apothecary & Pharmacy and we’re taking the week to reset, ground, and cleanse our space following this violation.

We’re thankful that all items have been accounted for. Making the time to ensure everyone’s safety is prioritized and that our team can take the time needed before reentering the space is our focus during this week’s closure.

We’re grateful for our family over at The Sanctuary | Apothecary • Botánica • Wellness Studio for supporting us during this time and we will reopen next week for regular hours.

1:1’s with Herbalist-in-Residence, Talyce, will be rescheduled and their September 5th, Ayurvedic Allies for Burn Out:

We would like to introduce you to our herb of the month, Sumac. Sumac, coming from the Arabic word Summãq, has a lineage of liberation.

The berries are a key spice in many dishes throughout North Afrika and West India. Musakhan, often considered the national dish of Palestine, consists of sumac, caramelized onions cooked in olive oil, spread on traditional Palestinian taboon bread, and topped with roasted chicken and pine nuts.

From sea to sea, we find Turtle Island’s very own varieties, such as staghorn sumac and shining sumac. Known as tarákwi in Kanien’kéha, a language belonging to the Mohawk people, Sumac is a known as a traditional medicine, drink, and beautiful red dye to many indigenous groups throughout the eastern and central regions of so called North America.

The whole of the plant is worked with-root, sprout, bark, leaf, and berry. It was likely southeastern indigenous groups like the Cherokee, and Muscogee nations, that shared sumac’s medicine in the 16th century with captive and self liberated Afrikans.

It’s through the ancestral memory of hibicus’s tart antioxidant rich nourishment that Afrikan diaspora found kinship with sumac, intiating them into the culture and celebratory collective known as “The Red Drink.”

Sumac has that sour tang that lets your body know it’s high in antioxidants, particularly vitamin C. Antioxidants prevent oxidative stress that can lead to tissue damage. They are also a refrigerant meaning they help cool the body on hot days or in the presence of a fever.

Some studies have shown that sumac is cardioprotective, lowering the risk of heart disease and the anti inflammatory properties benefit the whole body’s function. Whether as a red drink or traditional seasoning, sumac has a lot of love to give. They want to see you well as possible, in good health, and whole, for yourself first, and because we all need you. In Black August solidarity, Sumac.
