4 Shemu • 4th Month of Low Water
In the 4th month of Shemu, the ancient Egyptians faced the harshest of the dry season. The Nile flow was at its lowest. The land cracked under oppressive heat. Communities looked to the sky for the rising of Sopdet, the star whose appearance would signal the coming of the new year and, if the deities were pleased, the relief of the inundation.
But before the new year came the Epagomenal Days: five dangerous days at the end of the season of low water and high heat. With the canals no longer flushing waste away, rot accumulated. Disease could spread quickly. This was a time when the deities were urgently invoked for protection, and when the pacification of Sekhmet, as She who governs the demons of disease, was especially vital.
▪ What We Ask Her Help For This Month
Each month, we offer our raised energy to Sekhmet for a real-world concern larger than any one person can solve.
This year, the Epagomenal Days echo our own world. WHO reported on 13 July that global heat related deaths have risen sharply, with extreme temperatures driving spikes in dehydration, cardiac stress, and respiratory failure. ECMWF analysis shows stagnant heat patterns accelerating the spread of water borne and mosquito borne disease where drought and strained infrastructure leave communities exposed.
We ask Sekhmet not only to protect those already suffering under climate change, but to guide humanity toward curbing the harmful actions that fuel this crisis. May She help us see clearly, act responsibly, and strengthen our resolve to protect the world we share.
▪ About the Sekhmet Ritual Meditation
The Sekhmet Ritual is a devotional practice of breath, movement, and offering. We work with the body’s vital fire, raising erotic energy as a somatic act of reciprocity with the Goddess. In this practice, we give the Goddess what She wants, that She may choose to give us what we need.
▪ Join Us for the July Ritual
On Thursday, July 23, we gather to raise energy for protection, resilience, and shared resolve to forestall climate disaster. We invite you to join us.
