Men use mental health services at roughly half the rate of women, and that gap holds even when mental illness has already been diagnosed.

The reasons are multiple: access barriers, diagnostic tools that undercount male presentations, and a documented pattern of men interpreting help-seeking as a threat to identity rather than a practical health decision.

Trauma doesn't just affect how you feel. It changes how your brain is organized.

The amygdala (your brain's alarm system) becomes hyper-reactive. It fires threat signals at stimuli that aren't dangerous: a sound, a smell, a crowded room. The volume k**b gets stuck.

The hippocampus — which gives memories their context (when they happened, that they're in the past) — actually shrinks in people with chronic PTSD. Without that context, traumatic memories can feel present-tense. That's what a flashback is: not imagination, but a memory without a timestamp.

The prefrontal cortex (the part of your brain that says "we're safe, stand down") becomes under-active. It loses the ability to regulate the amygdala's alarm.

The result: a nervous system that can't de-escalate itself.

This is why talk therapy alone doesn't work for everyone. You can't think your way out of a neurological pattern. Treatment has to work at the level the disruption is happening.

The stellate ganglion is a cluster of nerves in your neck that's part of the sympathetic nervous system (the system that controls fight-or-flight).

In people with PTSD, that system is chronically over-activated. The brain stays in a threat state long after the threat is gone.

A Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is an ultrasound-guided injection of local anesthetic into that nerve cluster. The goal: interrupt the over-activation and allow the nervous system to reset.

We offer SGB here in the East Bay. Link in bio if you want to learn more or ask whether it's right for you.

June is .

Most people can't recognize PTSD when they see it, including the person who has it.
It's not always flashbacks. It's scanning every room you enter. It's weeks of feeling nothing. It's sleeping 3 hours a night for months and chalking it up to stress.

The DSM-5 definition of traumatic exposure is broader than most people realize — car accidents, medical emergencies, assault, childhood trauma, sudden loss.

Veterans account for roughly 20% of U.S. PTSD cases. The other 80% are civilians, most of whom never considered that what they experienced qualified.

The average time between trauma and a PTSD diagnosis is over a decade. Not because the symptoms weren't there, but because most people don't know what they're looking at.

12 million Americans are living with PTSD right now. Swipe to see what it actually looks like.

Mental health conversations matter. So does access to effective, evidence-based care.

NeuroStar TMS therapy is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment option for adults with depression who haven’t found relief from traditional antidepressant medication.

Burnout, depression, and anxiety share a lot of the same surface symptoms — which makes them easy to confuse and easy to mismanage.

The distinctions matter because the interventions are different. Rest helps burnout but doesn't treat depression. Coping skills help anxiety but don't address the underlying biology driving it.

Swipe for a breakdown of each and what sets them apart.
