It’s been a year since my knee surgery on this day 5/14/25. Here’s what I’ve learned during this process….

1. The orthopedic surgeon will say “you’ll be back in 6-9 months but I’m a year out s/p right knee patellar tendon repair and I’m still not 100%. My right quad is still significantly weaker than my left.

2. The mental struggle with recovering from an injury is sometimes worse than the physical pain itself.

3. I had to change my mindset about what I can and can’t do during this recovery process. Mentally I feel like I can still do certain exercises but I’m limited physically.

4. I still have pain and swelling. It happens at random times. Sometimes after a workout or just for no reason at all and it’s frustrating.

5. I am learning to accept that it may take years for my knee to feel strong and that it may never be back to “normal” but I won’t let that stop me from exercising.

6. As a PA in Pain Medicine and Athletic Trainer, it has made me a better provider because I can relate and empathize with my patients more.

Taking time for yourself so you can return full for your family is being a great mom. I hope all the mamas out there are finding ways to refill your cup today and every day. Happy Mother’s Day 💐

Why straight leg raises over sit-ups?? Let me give you 5 reasons why!

1. They target deep core muscles, not just surface abs.
Straight leg raises emphasize the transverse abdominis and lower abdominal fibers, which act like a natural corset. This is especially important for women post-pregnancy when it comes to managing core stability, because these muscles support the spine and pelvis…not just for aesthetics.

2. Less strain on the neck and spine. (Big on this one as a Pain Medicine PA)
Sit-ups often pull on the neck and load the lumbar spine, especially if form breaks down. Straight leg raises keep your back more stable (when done correctly), reducing risk of strain, something many women are cautious about, especially with prior pregnancies or lower back sensitivity.

3. Better pelvic control and stability (Especially after babies)
Leg raises challenge your ability to control pelvic tilt, which is key for true core strength. This translates directly to functional strength…..think lifting kids, running, or even maintaining posture.

4. They reduce hip flexor dominance (when done right)
Sit-ups tend to overuse hip flexors. Straight leg raises can too, but when you engage your core properly (posterior pelvic tilt), you train the abs to lead the movement instead of letting hip flexors take over.

5. More transferable to real-life strength
Core strength isn’t just about crunching forward…it’s about stabilizing your body. Straight leg raises train that stability in a way that carries over better into workouts, athletics, and daily life.

Bonus: These can be modified so you don’t have to hang from a bar. You can do them lying down on the floor (Just make sure your maintaining a somewhat neutral spine and you’re not feeling it in your back)

Just sitting here thinking about how I could use this money 😂

$500 bat and $400 glove…smh! That’s a round trip to the Caribbean just sayin! 😅 And that’s not including tournament fees, food, gas and hotels.

And we gotta be out here all weekend!! Lord knows I need a vacation but its the ultimate sacrifice for our kids. It will be all worth it…I’m just waiting on the ROI 😉 I know all my sports parents feel me on this.

If you know me, you know this is a big deal. I haven’t been able to even jog for 10 min without pain in my right knee. My patellar tendon surgery was on 5/14/25 and yesterday I ran 2 miles!! God is so good! That’s all! 🙌🏽✨🙏🏽

When there’s 4 males in the house, the amount of wrestling and roughness that goes on is annoying. Take all that masculine energy outside 😂 But from a fitness standpoint; how many men can still wrestle with their adult children? is in great shape cus is hella strong!! 😅

Side note: Mella with the commentary is hilarious 😆
