Over the past few days, we’ve been sharing simple reminders about fall prevention at home — better lighting, securing rugs, bathroom safety, footwear, medication changes.

Individually, none of these feel dramatic.

But falls rarely happen because of one big mistake.

A hallway that’s a little dim at night.

Many medications that older adults take can have side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. These side effects can make it harder to keep steady on your feet and increase the chance of a fall. Some types of medicines — including sedatives, antidepressants, and others that affect the central nervous system — are especially known for this.

Pay extra attention when a medication is changed, the dose is adjusted, or a new drug is added. Watch for signs like:
• Feeling unusually dizzy or lightheaded
• Trouble walking straight
• Greater fatigue after taking a pill

If you notice any of these, it’s worth calling your parent’s doctor or pharmacist and mentioning the symptoms — not to stop treatment, but to check whether the medicine mix is contributing to balance changes.

This is Part 2 of the fall-prevention reminders we’re sharing for families over the next few days.

Today’s one is simple — and very common.

Loose rugs and curled corners cause more falls than most people realize.

It doesn’t take much. A slightly lifted edge. A slipper catching just enough. A quick turn in the living room.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults (CDC).

Take a few minutes to walk through the house.
Look at the rugs, cords, and pathways.
If something shifts or curls, secure it or remove it.
