Objectives

The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine has a series of major objectives:

to provide and stimulate programs for research and education

to promote and encourage publication of research findings and other literature pertaining to podiatric sports medicine

to provide a consultative service for those persons engaged in sports medicine

to increase awareness of the medical pr

ofession, sports population, and general public to the profession of podiatric sports medicine and modalities available to those who participate in sports

to coordinate student chapters and to acquaint the podiatric medical student with the needs and demands placed upon athletes


These measures have proven successful over the years by reaching out to podiatrists, other practitioners, athletes, trainers, physical therapists, students and the public. It has been through all of these collective efforts that the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine has been able to realize its goals and continue to set new ones.

Each year, Pennsylvania podiatrists have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by participating in the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games, held at Penn State University in State College.

The event, held June 4–6, welcomed approximately 2,000 athletes and an equal number of coaches and volunteers who came together to celebrate achievement, inclusion, and the joy of competition.
For nearly 60 years, the Pennsylvania Special Olympics Summer Games have provided athletes with opportunities to compete in basketball, track and field, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, and many other events while building confidence, friendships, and life skills.

While the athletic competitions are the centerpiece of the Summer Games, many may not realize the important healthcare services available through the Healthy Athletes Program. This nationwide initiative provides free health screenings in areas including vision, hearing, dental health, wellness promotion, physical fitness, and, of course, foot and ankle health.

One of the program's most impactful components is Fit Feet, in which podiatric volunteers provide foot and ankle screenings, education, and recommendations designed to help athletes perform safely and comfortably. For some athletes, Fit Feet is their first introduction to podiatric care.

Thanks to the support of APEX Foot Health, EMB Medical, and PPMA our volunteer team was able to make a significant impact this year in the Fit Feet section of the PA games to which we accomplished the following:
• Screening 283 athletes over two days.
• Provided 209 custom-fitted heat-moldable inserts at no cost to athletes who could benefit from additional support and improved function.
• Hosting an educational and support event led by Steve Degyansky of EMB Medical
PPMA has long supported the Fit Feet initiative and its volunteers, helping to highlight the important role podiatrists play in improving health, mobility, and quality of life.
Volunteers traveled from across Pennsylvania to participate, including a dedicated team of four podiatrists from Bay City Podiatry and two second-year residents from LECOM, who have made annual participation a tradition.

Beyond the numbers, however, lies the true value of this experience, hard to put into words.

Every volunteer leaves with memorable stories. We meet athletes who overcome challenges many of us cannot imagine, yet approach life with enthusiasm, determination, and gratitude. Their resilience serves as a powerful reminder of what truly matters.

Many volunteers experience a moment of perspective during the Games. We all face daily stresses and challenges, but spending time with these athletes often reminds us how fortunate we are.

One athlete I met suffered a stroke at age one and lives with both physical and cognitive challenges. Now in his twenties, he utilizes a service dog and receives IV therapy, yet he competes in gymnastics with incredible joy and enthusiasm. Encounters like these leave a lasting impression long after the Games have ended.
The Summer Games have also become something of a family reunion for many volunteers.

Colleagues reconnect, new friendships are formed, and first-time participants quickly discover why so many return year after year. Between screenings, volunteers and athletes alike enjoyed the festive atmosphere, complete with music, dancing, horses, motorcycles, snow cones, and other activities that make the event extra special.

As podiatrists, we understand the importance of healthy feet in supporting movement, independence, and athletic performance.

For more than 25 years, I have had the privilege of volunteering with Special Olympics athletes alongside Drs. Tomasi and Ziegler, I was honored to receive PPMA's McQuaid Award in recognition of this service. Yet the greatest reward has never been the recognition—it has been the relationships and experiences shared with the athletes.

The experience serves as a reminder that some of the most rewarding moments in healthcare come not from what we give, but from what we receive in return. We encourage PPMA members to consider volunteering in the future. Many first-time participants quickly become annual volunteers after experiencing the spirit, camaraderie, and inspiration that define the Special Olympics.

Through Fit Feet, we have the opportunity to use our skills to help athletes perform at their best while giving back to our communities in a meaningful way. The experience I describe can best be summed up in a famous quote from Maya Angelou that most of us recognize, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

Historic FIFA World Cup Milestone Highlights
Expanding Role of Podiatric Sports Medicine

AAPSM Fellow Howard F. Liebeskind, DPM, FFPM RCPS (Glasg), CPSM, FAAPSM, CAQPSM and “MD Affiliate” of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine has achieved a remarkable professional milestone that reflects more than four decades of dedication to podiatric sports medicine and soccer medicine.

Dr. Liebeskind, who serves as team podiatrist for the U.S. Men's National Team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, previously provided podiatric services to the national team during the historic 1994 FIFA World Cup hosted in the United States. With his return to the sport's premier global event in 2026, he is acknowledged as the first officially designated sports podiatrist to provide national team services during two FIFA World Cups hosted on home soil.

This unique distinction represents a significant milestone in the history of podiatric sports medicine and highlights the growing integration of podiatric physicians within multidisciplinary sports medicine teams at the highest levels of international competition.

As modern football continues to evolve, the role of the sports podiatrist has expanded beyond traditional foot and ankle care to encompass lower-extremity biomechanics, injury prevention, performance optimization, footwear and orthotic integration, load management, and return-to-play decision-making. These areas have become increasingly important components of comprehensive athlete care within elite professional and international soccer programs.

Dr. Liebeskind's participation in both the 1994 and 2026 FIFA World Cups serves as a testament to the profession's continued advancement and the valuable contributions podiatric sports medicine specialists provide in helping athletes perform safely and effectively on the world's largest sporting stage.

SMU College of Podiatric Medicine Faculty, Timothy Dutra, Receives Lifetime Achievement Award (Featured in SMU College of Podiatric Medicine News)

Dr. Timothy Dutra, DPM ‘85, recently received a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) at its recent Stand Alone Meeting in Chandler, Arizona. Dutra is an Assistant Professor at Samuel Merritt University (SMU) College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) and has been an esteemed faculty member since 1987.

A native of the East Bay, Dutra earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis, and graduate degrees from California State University, East Bay. After receiving his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree at the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM)—the former name of SMU CPM—he completed his residency training and podiatric sports medicine fellowship in Long Beach, CA.

“I greatly appreciate the education and training that CCPM provided me for having a successful and exciting career in podiatric medicine and surgery, as well as the opportunity to share my passion for sports medicine with our podiatric students,” Dutra reflects.

He credits his success to exceptional mentorship throughout his education and training, citing Drs. Doug Richie, Bill Olson, John Pagliano, Ron Valmassy, Rich Blake, and Chris Smith, as well as the privilege of working alongside many great and elite athletes across all sports and levels.

With over two decades of practice in San Leandro, Dutra built a remarkable reputation for his wide-ranging contributions to the field. These include nearly 25 years as Podiatric Team Physician for the University of California, Berkeley's intercollegiate athletics, serving as Clinical Director for the Special Olympics of Northern California Healthy Athletes Fit Feet Program, mentoring podiatry students in education and training at SMU CPM, and leading students on CPM Medical Missions to the California-Mexico border.

His impact extends well beyond the clinic and classroom. Dutra has held leadership roles in numerous professional and community organizations, serving as president of the AAPSM, the Alameda-Contra Costa Podiatric Medical Association, SMU's Faculty Organization, the Alameda County Medical Center Foundation, the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce, and the San Leandro Kiwanis. Dutra was previously recognized for his contributions with SMU’s first Health Impact Outstanding Service Award in 2023.

The AAPSM Lifetime Achievement Award was presented in recognition of Dutra's long-standing commitment to the AAPSM, honoring the countless hours and tremendous energy he has devoted to shaping and strengthening the organization over many years. “Sports medicine has always been my passion, and the Academy has been the foundation and promoter of podiatric sports medicine throughout my 40-year career,” says Dutra.

The sentiment was echoed by Rita Yates, Executive Director of the AAPSM, who remarked at the meeting, “Those of us that know Tim understand that his contributions go far beyond titles or roles. His mentorship, dedication, and friendships have left a lasting impact on countless colleagues and students alike.”

Reflecting on his career, Dutra adds, “I am so thankful to have been a part of the generation of sports podiatrists who treated many different sports and became an integral part of the sports medicine team.”

Congratulations to AAPSM Member Rob Frimmel who on April 25 ran 13.1 miles in the Derby mini-Marathon in Louisville, Kentucky. His time was 1:52:43 and he took 5th in his age group. Beat his time by 3 minutes from last year. So as Rob states - you can get better with age!
