Embrace Abilities

Embrace Abilities Empower. Advocate. Connect. https://linktr.ee/embraceabilitiesms We’re here to celebrate differences and ensure every family feels a true sense of belonging.

Established in February 2024, we’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit building an inclusive community for individuals (3–21) with different abilities and their families on the MS Gulf Coast. Embrace Abilities is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, founded by Bridgett Lee in 2024. Inspired by lived experience, our mission is to create a welcoming, inclusive community where children, teen

s, and young adults with different abilities—and their families—can thrive. We proudly serve families navigating a wide range of disabilities, including genetic disorders, developmental and intellectual disabilities, neurodiversity (like autism and ADHD), and rare conditions. Our vision is a future where every child is valued, respected, and empowered—no matter their diagnosis or background.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐞 𝐃𝐨:
• Host monthly inclusive events, sensory-friendly activities, and social meetups
• Offer programs like Play & Connect meetups, Coffee with Caregivers, and Sibshops, with a focus on whole family support
• Provide caregiver resources, peer support, and advocacy for families navigating all types of disabilities—ensuring everyone feels seen, supported, and included.
• Partner with local clinics and professionals to expand access to therapy, education, and community connections

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐖𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞:
• Children and young adults (ages 3–21) with a wide variety of abilities—including but not limited to autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, Fragile X, cerebral palsy, rare genetic conditions, and more—plus their families, caregivers, and allies across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡:
• All participants, regardless of age, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at events for safety and support
• We strive to accommodate allergies, accessibility, and communication needs—just let us know during registration
• For those aging out of our youth programs, we offer guidance and referrals to community resources like the DREAM program

At Embrace Abilities, we believe diversity, acceptance, and empathy make our community stronger. Join us as we work together to build a more inclusive world for everyone!

We couldn’t let the day end without wishing Maryjo Bullock a very Happy Birthday.

Maryjo, thank you for the way you show up with real care and a steady presence. You make space for people to be honest, you listen without trying to fix everything, and you remind us that support can be both practical and human. We’re grateful to have you on the Embrace Abilities board, and even more grateful to call you our friend.

Hope you’re wrapping up your birthday feeling loved and truly appreciated. 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💜

A little late posting this, but we still wanted to share. These clips are from our Sibshop last weekend. Maryjo explains what Sibshops are for siblings of kids with different abilities and medical complexities, plus a quick look at what it feels like in the room. This is a space where siblings get to connect with other kids who get it and just be kids.

Returning kids mini reunion is in July. Next Sibshop open to new families will be in September. Registration details will be shared in August. Please keep an eye on our page for the announcement.

Lost Pizza Co.’s yearbook signing is a really special end of school tradition in Ocean Springs. It started four years ago when Wes Besancon didn’t get the signatures he hoped for, and his mom and Lost Pizza Co. helped turn that hurt into something welcoming for students.

Wes said it best: “it’s not really about me anymore.” That resonates with Embrace Abilities so much. We started because of the exclusion and loneliness of one child too, and over time it’s grown into something bigger than any one person. It becomes community.

Huge congratulations to Wes on graduating and heading to Southern Miss this fall. We enjoyed being there and seeing familiar faces. When Eric Braden reached out to us about passing the torch to Embrace Abilities next year, it was an immediate yes. We’re honored to be part of keeping this tradition going with Lost Pizza Co.

We are so heartbroken to hear this news. Y’all have meant a lot to our families and to the disability community here on the Coast.

Thank you for creating a place where people felt welcome and valued exactly as they are. You didn’t just talk about inclusion, you lived it, and that matters more than we can say. We are truly grateful for every bit of support you have shown our community.

Sending y’all lots of love and steady support over these next two weeks. If you can, stop by before May 30 and let their team make you your favorite drink and enjoy a delicious stuffed waffle. We love you guys a latte. 💙☕️

Today was our first ever virtual Embrace the Journey support group, and it was such a good session. Maryjo led our topic, living in survival mode, and we wanted to share her slides with you guys so you can get a feel for the kind of conversations we have in this space.

Survival mode is not a character flaw. It can look like brain fog, irritability, decision fatigue, trouble resting, and feeling like you are just trying to make it to bedtime. If any of that sounds familiar, you are not alone.

If you hopped on with us today, thank you for being there. Embrace the Journey is now a monthly program, alternating in person and virtual meetings. If you would like to be added to the contact list for upcoming meetings, please message us and we will reach out as soon as the next one is scheduled.

Today’s Sibshop was all about the summer vibes.

We started with tie dyeing T shirts as a low pressure way to connect. Feelings on a Rope came next, with prompts that ranged from silly to real life, including what it feels like to sit through siblings’ appointments, therapy, and waiting rooms. Then we made ice cream by rolling a ball that churned it as we went, which turned into an easy way to keep conversation flowing. We finished that stretch with Sibshop Jenga, bringing in teamwork, movement, and prompts that help siblings share what they do not always get to say out loud.

Lunch was pizza thanks to the Papa Johns Pizza fundraiser deal, plus our homemade ice cream for dessert. After lunch we explored assistive devices, from AAC devices to switch activated toys, and talked about how different tools can help with communication and play. Then we headed back outside for tug of war and a water balloon fight, and wrapped up with one last treat by making cotton candy.

A big thank you to Summer Wilton/Happy Coast Families for facilitating and to the wonderful ladies of Junior Auxiliary of Gulfport for volunteering their time and leaning into the mess, the laughs, and the big feelings right alongside our siblings. A special thank you as well to The Arc for allowing us to use their facility and for their support.

To our families, thank you for trusting us with your kiddos. See you next time!
