Why Do We Call Them Topical Patches?

You ask…. Why do you call your patches “topical” rather than “transdermal”?

We answer… A transdermal patch contains a drug. A drug is something that has gone through the process of approval by the FDA. This includes millions of dollars in testing, trials, and approvals.

Most of our customers are not in the OTC drug market. They make vitamin patches, nutraceuticals, and cosmetic patches.

Why won't you combine nutraceuticals with OTC drugs?

American Custom Technologies makes both OTC drug patches and nutraceutical patches. We're capable of working with either ingredient type. So why won't we combine them? We called the FDA and were told that such combinations might be subject to FDA compliance actions. FDA compliance actions tend to be things that throw small businesses into bankruptcy, and we can't do that to our customers.

What's the difference between monolithic and pad (or reservoir) patches?

A monolithic patch has the active ingredient mixed directly with the adhesive. Monolithic patches can be worn up to 36 hours. They allow you to print directly on the patch which maximizes your branding opportunities.

A pad (or reservoir) patch can be worn substantially longer than a monolithic patch. Your customer will benefit from your patch for longer periods if you utilize a reservoir patch. Not only can pad patches be worn longer, more active ingredients can be included.
