Why Did I Get Into Massage Therapy? Plus Common MisconceptionsβA Blog Post by Dave Weber
Besides massage therapy being the coolest modality ever, no bias hereπ, getting a license means leveling up!1οΈβ£π
Being able to do RESONANCE THERAPY with folks is an important step in my practice. I have been so blessed with the Rezzimax Tuner that I wanted to be able to use it on my clients and help resolve their ailments through reorganizing their nervous systems! I offer free demos because I want EVERYONE to try it!
CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY is huge when it comes to helping people heal. My sister-in-law Alisha Sechser, RN, CFT, was trained in this, and I have received several treatments from her. It's seriously like a nervous and fascia system reset! I SO wanted to offer this as well in my practice after those revitalizing sessions with her!πββοΈ
With this foundation, I'll be able to eventually be trained in and offer Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET) and Myopractory!π
Next, misconceptions about massage therapy.π€
Sometimes massage therapists are called masseuses, and all they are perceived as doing is help people feel good and get their bodies rubbed all up and down. Masseuse or masseur (female or male respectively) are French words that means to knead. In the US, the word masseuse has developed a negative connotation and became synonymous with s*x work. Not only is doing massage for s*x illegal, but that is NOT therapy. Even the word MASSAGE has become synonymous with iffy situations because, unfortunately, there are many counterfeit therapists out there.π As professionals, our legal title is Licensed Massage Therapist or LMT.
MASSAGE THERAPY, on the other hand, is a therapeutic approach to relaxing tight and sore muscles. It deals with unwinding the connective tissue called fasciaβnow that's where much of the pain actually comes from! As therapists, we are trained on improving range of motion, reducing pain in the muscles and fascia, and even helping people heal faster after surgery through lymphatic massage! Did you know that we know more about muscles than medical doctors do? Also, we are able to do much of what PTs do! Certifications are necessary for using certain kinds equipment like tens units and doing cupping, but baseline-wise, we are trained to help people recover from hypertonicity (tense muscles), injury, and dis-ease. Some insurance companies cover massage therapy, but to be sure yours does, call them up. Drs, NPs, OTs, Chriopractors, etc. refer their patients to massage therapists for extra support. Pretty cool huh? I like the description "muscular therapy" a lot because that's what we're actually doing!
Thank you for your time with me today and I hope that this information has helped you!π
