Congratulations to Lionel Chong, John Christopher Magnotto, Pradyumna Simha, Shahzabe Mann, Gazi Husain, Jacob Fomin, Alexis Kim, Kelsi Hurdle former NYIT Visualization Lab Manager and Brian Beatty, Professor of Anatomy, on their new publication in Cardiovascular Pathology.

The team used high-resolution micro-CT and optical surface metrology to investigate whether calcium burden is associated with changes in the luminal surface topography of cadaveric coronary arteries. The research was supported by the Anatomy Lab Research Program.

NYITCOM is proud to announce that Satoru Kobayashi, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, is the recipient of a $573,750 award from the NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to study how the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin damages the heart.

While doxorubicin is an effective and widely used cancer treatment, it can cause lasting cardiac injury and, in some patients, heart failure. Dr. Kobayashi’s project, “Redefining the Role of Lysosomal Membrane Permeabilization in Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity,” will investigate how chemotherapy disrupts lysosomes—the cell’s internal recycling and maintenance system—in heart muscle cells.

The project will leverage high- and super-resolution microscopy at the NYIT Imaging Center to visualize and quantify cellular changes associated with chemotherapy-related heart injury.

This NIH-supported research brings together cardiovascular biology, cancer therapy, cell biology, and advanced imaging, while creating opportunities for NYITCOM students to participate in cutting-edge biomedical research.
