Breastfeeding a baby to sleep is common, normal, and works well for many families. If it feels right for you and your baby, it does not need to be “fixed.”

Babies grow and change over time, and what they need at bedtime today will not always be what they need later. Meeting your baby’s need for comfort and closeness now helps build security and confidence as they grow. Many babies naturally move away from feeding to sleep when they are ready, without pressure or tears.

If you are thinking ahead, gentle routines or sleep cues like a song, story, or special comfort item can be added over time. Other caregivers can also help with bedtime in their own ways when needed.

There is no one right way to help a baby fall asleep. Trust your instincts. You are the expert on your baby.

How long will my baby nurse?

If given the opportunity, most babies will nurse until they naturally outgrow the need, which appears to be sometime between 2.5-7 years.

In the early days, it can be difficult for new parents to tell whether their baby is feeding effectively. Immediately after birth, diaper counts and stool color can give us important clues about how feeding is going. Once colostrum becomes transitional (and later mature) milk, there are three key things we look for in newborns: diaper output, audible swallowing, and visible swallowing.

La Leche League International has publicly voiced opposition to collaboration between the United Nations and Nestlé, raising concerns about conflicts of interest related to the marketing of breastmilk substitutes.

For decades, families, advocates, healthcare providers, and organizations around the world have worked to protect breastfeeding and infant feeding support from commercial influence through the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

At La Leche League Canada, we believe families deserve evidence-based information, compassionate support, and infant feeding education free from commercial pressure.

A deep latch can make all the difference. Bring baby to you—nose to nipple—and let them tip their head back slightly. This encourages a wide open mouth and a more comfortable latch.
