Trauma is, at its core, an energetic phenomenon.
In the biological sense rather than the musical sense that many of us associate the word âenergyâ with. Every threat to survival mobilizes an extraordinary amount of physiological energy. The autonomic nervous system prepares the body to fight, flee, defend life, or submit. Muscles tense. The heart accelerates. Stress hormones surge. Every system is recruited toward one objective: survival.
Trauma is not defined solely by the event itself. It is defined by what happens within the organism when that survival response cannot reach what is called âcompletionâ.
This is where so many misunderstand trauma. We humans are not overly different than other mammals when it comes to our nervous systems and threat detection.
The symptoms are not created by the memory of the event. They emerge from the unresolved residue of a defensive response that became interrupted, inhibited, or frozen. That unresolved activation remains embedded within the nervous system, where it continues to influence physiology long after the danger has passed.
This is the freeze response, the immobilization in the presence of overwhelming activation.
Imagine driving your car with one foot pressing the accelerator to the floor while the other forcefully holds the brake. The engine strains. Heat builds. Components wear under opposing forces.
The nervous system experiences something remarkably similar.
Internally, survival energy continues mobilizing. Externally, the body is unable to act.
The resulting turbulence reverberates throughout the entire organism.
Over months or years, this unresolved physiological conflict may contribute to chronic pain, functional neurological symptoms, digestive disorders, immune dysregulation, anxiety, panic, insomnia, exhaustion, and countless other conditions that often appear disconnected from the original experience.
The body remembers what the conscious mind cannot always recall.
Healing, therefore, is not simply a cognitive process. Insight alone cannot discharge a survival response that was never allowed to complete itself.
Recovery requires restoring movement where there was immobility. It requires gently thawing the freeze response, allowing the nervous system to complete what it was biologically designed to do but was once prevented from doing.
This is why my work centers on somatic healing, nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and energy work.
Trauma is an unfinished biological process carried by the body.
And until the body is given the opportunity to resolve what it has been holding, it will continue speaking in the language it knows best: Symptoms.
