Some pieces are more than décor. They carry the stories of the people who came before us.

For decades, Geri Hopkins served our community as a nurse. For a time, she worked right here in this building alongside Dr. Bill Garred, providing family healthcare and giving immunizations beneath the light of this very exam lamp.

When they left this building to begin caring for patients in a newer, larger clinic, Geri was allowed to take the exam light with her. Eventually, it was tucked away in an outbuilding—quietly holding its history for all these years.

When Geri learned that we were renovating the building and bringing healthcare back within these walls, she thought of the old light.

Amber, our office manager and Geri’s granddaughter, helped bring it back to us—and Amber’s husband carefully refurbished it for our office. Now, after all these years, it stands here once again.

The hands have changed. Medicine has changed. The building has changed. But the purpose remains: caring for the people of our community.

This beautiful light has come full circle—from this building, into Geri’s keeping, and now back to the place where its story began.

A timeless American medical exam light from 1940s-1950s….

It wasn’t forgotten.

It was simply waiting to come home. 🤍

August is Hair Loss Awareness Month 🤍

Noticing more hair than usual in your brush or shower can be alarming, but some shedding is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. Most people naturally lose around 50–100 hairs each day.

What’s more important is noticing a change from your normal. Increased shedding, a widening part, a thinner ponytail, bald patches, or more visible scalp can all be signs that something else may be going on.

Hair loss can happen for many reasons, including genetics, stress, illness, hormonal changes, certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, and other medical conditions. Sometimes, the trigger can even occur months before the shedding begins.

And while it’s tempting to reach for a new shampoo, vitamin, or trending product, hair loss isn’t one-size-fits-all. Identifying the type of hair loss — and what may be causing it is an important part of finding the right treatment.

If you’ve noticed a significant or persistent change in your hair, consider scheduling an evaluation with a dermatology provider. 🤍

Steph is a nurse in our main practice in Dakota Dunes. She is also our Go-to gal with any questions we have patient, supply, or IT related. We appreciate her expertise and professionalism, but mostly her kind and patient way she is always willing to help out. We are grateful for all you do, Steph!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Steph ✨

Steph has been with Dunes Dermatology for the past five years and has helped build the practice from the ground up. As our Nurse Manager and a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), she plays an important role in supporting our providers, staff, and patients each day.

In addition to assisting in Mohs surgery, Steph is certified in Mohs histotechnology and cuts and stains Mohs slides in our lab. Her knowledge, experience, and versatility allow her to contribute to many areas of the practice, making her an essential part of our team.

Outside of work, Steph enjoys spending time with her family. Whether they’re spending time outdoors or enjoying a quiet day together, family is an important part of her life.

Three Years in Onawa. 🤍

Three years ago, Dunes Dermatology opened its doors in Onawa with a simple goal: to bring high-quality, compassionate dermatology care close to home.

Today, we’re celebrating three years—and doing it from a brand-new space created especially for the patients and community we are so grateful to serve.

At Dunes Dermatology, we care for hair, skin, and nails through every age and stage of life. Our days include everything from rashes, acne, eczema, psoriasis, hair loss and nail disorders to the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer—which continues to be the most common diagnosis we make.

And because caring for your skin can also mean helping you feel confident in it, we’re proud to offer cosmetic treatments including Botox, microneedling, chemical peels, and individualized skincare guidance.

We believe there is room for both.

For medicine and aesthetics.
For prevention and restoration.
For treating disease and helping someone feel a little more like themselves.

But more than anything, we believe in taking care of people.

Over the last three years, you have trusted us with your concerns, your diagnoses, your treatments, your families—and sometimes your fears. You followed us, recommended us, encouraged us, and allowed this little dermatology practice to grow into something we are incredibly proud of.

Our new clinic may be the most visible sign of that growth, but you are the reason behind it.
