The most maddening version of bad sleep isn't being tired. It's being completely wrecked all day and then weirdly, infuriatingly alert the moment you finally lie down.
You spent the whole day dragging. You'd have given anything for a nap at 2pm. And now it's 11, you're horizontal, the lights are off, and your brain has decided this is the perfect time to review every decision you've made since 2014.
Here's what's happening. Your nervous system flipped into stress mode and forgot how to flip back. In the daytime that looks like exhaustion and fog. At night, exactly when it should stand down, it spikes instead, because a body stuck in survival mode treats lying still in the dark as the riskiest part of the day.
That's why winding down does nothing. You can't reason with a stress response. It's not waiting for permission. It's waiting for a real sign that it's safe to switch off.
That's the thing we actually work on. Not another wind-down routine. Teaching your system the difference between an ordinary day and an emergency, so it stops treating your bed like a lookout post.
Tired all day and wired all night doesn't mean you're broken. Your nervous system is just stuck in the wrong gear. And gears can shift.
