Paula Garbourg discovered that ring muscles do not work in isolation. They are part of one interconnected system. When a ring muscle is injured or weakened, other healthy ring muscles can be activated to support it, strengthen it, and help regulate it even from a distance. This is not a metaphor. This is how the body actually works. And it means the body has a remarkable ability to heal itself from within if we know how to join it and help.

In the 1940s, Paula Garbourg was told she would probably spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. Instead of giving up, she turned to what she knew, warm-up exercises from ballet and vocal training. She didn’t just maintain her abilities. She healed. And along the way, she discovered something entirely new about the human body. Her discovery became a holistic self healing method: The Paula Method.

How many sphincter muscles do you think you have in your body? Two? Three? The answer might surprise you.
You actually have sphincters everywhere; including in your eyes, your mouth, your throat, and deep inside your body. They participate in almost everything you do: speaking, eating, breathing, walking, and standing.
These ring-shaped muscles are far more central to your health than most people realize. Learning how to work with them can improve your health and daily functioning.

We often experience pain, tension, or limitation as if the body is working against us.
But many of these responses are protective.
When we begin to understand how the body is trying to protect us, we can join it and accelerate the change we are seeking.

03/18/2026

We are taught that change requires effort, control, and leaving our comfort zone.
Yet when we wish to support the body and reconnect with its innate healing ability, effort becomes an obstacle.
Through listening, we can work with the body. That is when real change begins.

The spine is not meant to be held rigid.
It is designed to move and respond to changing situations.
When we “hold” it, we may prevent it from doing what it does best and go against its natural intelligence.

There is nothing wrong with your body.

Most of the time, what’s missing
is not strength but understanding.

The world teaches us to control,
fix, and push.
But often we interrupt the very
process the body is trying to
carry out.

In March, I’m opening a 30-day
self-paced course.

March 1–31.
5 minutes a day.

Pelvic pain is a signal.
Not a failure.

Understanding the signal
shapes the approach.

Free-form work is not something we invent.
It is something we allow.

In the Paula Method, beyond the exercises, there is a moment where the body begins to move in its own way not because we told it to, but because we are willing to allow it.

Many people prefer clear instructions.
It feels safer to be told what to do.

But free-form work asks something else of us.
It asks us to remain curious.
To let go of control.
To trust what begins to unfold from within.

When we allow that spontaneous movement to emerge,
we discover that the wisdom was always there.

Nothing compares to that experience.
