What if grief left a pattern?

For this series, I didn’t want clean, static portraits. I wanted them to feel closer to old film: alive, slightly unstable, not fully in focus.

For every woman’s face, I use a granulating paint, Lunar Blue, because it doesn’t sit flat on the page. It moves in water, breaking apart, pooling, and shifting as it dries. I can guide it, but I can’t fully control the outcome.

While I paint, I run sound through the water and pigment. The vibration physically moves the paint as it’s forming the image, so the figure and the background are constantly adjusting in real time.

The result is a woman and a faint silhouette of herself, like emotions overlapping.

Drop an emoji below on where you’re at today:

🖤 heavy, grief, exhaustion
🤍 numb, quiet, disconnected
💙 calm, steady, grounded
💚 healing, rebuilding, hopeful
💜 tender, emotional, in-between
❤️ full, open, connected
🩶 foggy, tired, not fully here
💛 soft, okay, gently moving forward

What if your survival is dependent on deep love?

That’s the question behind this entire “Sound Wave” series.

Not how to return to who you were before.
But how to begin again after life changes you.

Chronic illness and a concussion changed EVERYTHING about my life, and quickly. I hardly had time to adjust in my breathing.

What about you?

After chronic illness.
After deep loss and grief.

After becoming someone softer, slower, more weathered than you ever imagined.

Each portrait is created with actual sound vibrations moving through water and pigment - turning emotion into texture, movement, and resonance.

Listening to “Begin Again” while painting this piece felt like hearing the quiet hope underneath survival itself.

Because so many women are trying to begin again while privately mourning the person they used to be.

And maybe healing isn’t about becoming untouchable.

Maybe healing is learning your new self is still worthy of being seen, loved, and held gently. How would you hold a grieving child?

If this spoke to something in you, tag a woman that would be softened by this message - the women who need these pieces always seem to find them at the right time.

I think that’s why I paint women this way.

Soft at the edges.

Full of static, tenderness, memory, survival.

My “Sound Wave” series explores the invisible things we carry - grief, chronic illness, loss, resilience, the versions of ourselves we’ve had to leave behind to keep going.

Listening to “Temporary People” by Lena Karla while creating this felt almost unbearable in the best way. So many women know what it’s like to be changed by love, pain, survival, or time.

Maybe that’s why these pieces resonate so deeply with the women who collect my work.

Not because they want perfect art.

But because they want something in their space that says:

“You survived this too.”

Each piece is painted with actual sound waves vibrating the paper and paint, turning emotion into something physical you can see and feel.

Something that feels like an exhale after a hard season.

Something that reminds them softness is still possible.

Which word feels most like you right now: rebuilding, grieving, surviving, or softening?

I think so many women are fighting wars no one else can see.

Holding families together while falling apart internally.
Learning how to live in changed bodies.
Carrying grief without ever calling it grief.
Surviving things they never imagined surviving.

That’s who I paint for.

The women who are weathered, but not broken.
Soft, but still standing.
The ones rebuilding themselves, without applause.

Listening to “Rebuild” while working on this piece felt like hearing the emotional heartbeat of the entire “Sound Wave” series.

Because these portraits are about what survival feels like in the body.

Each piece is created with actual sound vibrations moving through water and pigment - turning emotion, memory, exhaustion, hope, and resilience into something physical you can see and feel.

Not art that asks you to “move on.”

Art that says: you are allowed to become someone new after hard things. And it’s ok to just be here.

I started a new series while grieving a version of myself I can never fully return to.

Before chronic illness, before survival became part of my daily language, I moved through the world differently — faster, lighter, louder. There are pieces of that version of me I still miss deeply.

The “Sound Wave” portraits are a way of translating that grief into something visible.

Each layer feels like frequency. Memory. Static. Echo. Translation.

The way emotion lives in the body long after a life changes.

The way my brain now translates through interference.

I think this series is teaching me that grief isn’t always about losing a person.

Sometimes it’s grieving your former self while slowly learning how to love the person you are becoming.

So these pieces aren’t really about sadness.

They’re about resonance.
About what remains.
Telling truth even when it hurts.

Today I turn another year older, and I keep thinking about the idea of making both my 8-year-old self and my 80-year-old self proud.

My 8-year-old self — the quiet, sensitive, creative little girl who felt everything deeply, who covered pages in color, was a keen observer, and dreamed big dreams — would be amazed that I never stopped creating. She would be proud that art became more than a hobby… it became a language, a healing space, and a way to connect with others.

My 80-year-old self, I think, won’t care about perfection or productivity. She’ll care that I loved people well. That I stayed soft in a hard world. That I kept showing up — through the hard seasons, the healing seasons, the rebuilding seasons.

She’ll care that I was brave enough to create meaningful work.

That I poured love into my family.

That I built a life rooted in purpose instead of appearances.

This year has reminded me how much strength can exist alongside tenderness and pain. I’m proud of the woman who learned to keep going while learning to slow down. Proud of the artist. Proud of the nurse. The educator. The leader. Proud of the wife, mom, daughter, sister, and grandmother. Proud of the woman learning to care for her health with grace instead of frustration (which is a work in progress).

Aging feels different when you realize your life is becoming evidence of what mattered to you.

So here’s to becoming someone both versions of myself would recognize:
creative, compassionate, resilient, curious, and still learning every day. 🤍
