I don’t get songs stuck in my head, I get sandwiches stuck in my head.

This one has been living rent-free in my brain for weeks.

Buttery pan-toasted rosemary sourdough, a chopped arugula salad tossed in lemon juice, lemon zest, avocado oil, honey, mustard, garlic salt, and onion powder, plus chia, flax, h**p, parmesan, garlic-salted tomatoes, and mesquite smoked turkey.

The flavor combination is unreal, but nutritionally it’s a powerhouse too: protein for satiety and muscle maintenance, fiber for gut health, healthy fats for blood sugar regulation, and a variety of plants that feed your microbiome.

Recipe:
• Make the dressing (lemon juice + zest, avocado oil, honey, mustard, garlic salt, onion powder)
• Chop arugula into tiny pieces (I use scissors)
• Toss with dressing
• Add 1 tsp each chia, flax, and h**p
• Toss again, add parmesan, and toss one more time
• Layer onto toasted rosemary sourdough with garlic-salted tomatoes and mesquite smoked turkey

Protein. Fiber. Healthy fats. Plants. Flavor.

I’m 37 weeks pregnant with my 6th baby carried to full term, and after 7 pregnancies, these are 5 things I wish someone had told me before my first:

• Stop pushing “like you’re pooping.”
• Educate yourself about birth—even if you plan on getting an epidural.
• Fiber, fat, and protein first.
• Move your body because pregnancy feels better when you’re strong.
• Pregnancy prep starts before pregnancy.

The biggest surprises?

I didn’t start prioritizing metabolic health until my 5th and 6th babies carried to term, and I didn’t intentionally prepare physically with strength training, core work, and pelvic floor exercises until this pregnancy.

At 37 weeks pregnant, chasing five kids around, I’m happy to say I’ve felt stronger.

Not perfect. Not pain-free. Just stronger.

Looking back, I wish someone had taught me that pregnancy doesn’t start with a positive test. Your metabolic health, muscle mass, sleep, stress, and nutrition all matter long before conception.

Seven pregnancies later, these are the things I’d tell first-time-pregnant Shelby.

What advice would you add? 👇

If your kids won’t eat salad, try chopping it ridiculously small.

Seriously.

When everything is finely chopped and served with chips and a flavorful dressing, kids stop picking around the vegetables and start eating them.

And no, the chips and dressing don’t “cancel out” the nutritional value of the salad. The cabbage still provides fiber, the cilantro still contains beneficial plant compounds, and the chicken still brings protein.

This recipe is really just a starting point. Add whatever veggies you have on hand, toss in a can of black beans for extra fiber and protein, or add cumin or taco seasoning to the dressing for a different flavor.

My current version:

🥗 1 full head cabbage, finely chopped
🥗 1 large bunch cilantro, chopped
🥗 1½–2 chicken breasts, cooked and chopped

Dressing:
• ¾ cup Greek yogurt, mayo, or a mix of both
• Juice and zest of 2 limes
• 1 tsp onion powder
• 1 tsp sriracha (or more to taste)
• Salt to taste

Mix everything together, grab some chips, and enjoy.

Sometimes a handful of chips is the difference between a salad nobody touches and a salad everyone finishes.
