Your body makes an antioxidant that can recharge other antioxidants after they've been used up.
Most people have never heard its name.
First, why that matters.
Free radicals are a byproduct of normal life.
Exercise, stress, processed food, even breathing produces them, and antioxidants exist to neutralize them.
The part that gets skipped: once an antioxidant does that job, it's spent. Done. Out of the rotation.
Enter alpha lipoic acid, or ALA.
ALA is made in your mitochondria, and it breaks the usual rules in two ways:
- Most antioxidants are either water-soluble or fat-soluble, which limits where they can work. ALA is both, so it stays active in the watery inside of your cells and the fatty membranes around them.
- It helps regenerate spent antioxidants like vitamin C and glutathione, putting them back to work instead of leaving them benched.
It also has a day job.
