👁️ This is the Diaton Tonometer, a newer approach to measuring intraocular pressure (IOP), or the pressure inside the eye.
Why is IOP important? Elevated eye pressure is one of the major risk factors for glaucoma, a disease that damages the optic nerve. Glaucoma can progress without obvious symptoms in its early stages, and the vision loss it causes is irreversible and can eventually lead to blindness.
IOP is commonly cited in the 10–21 mmHg range, although there is no single “normal” pressure for everyone. Glaucoma can occur even when IOP is within this range, so measuring eye pressure is only one part of a complete glaucoma evaluation.
Risk increases with factors such as age, family history, elevated IOP, certain racial/ethnic backgrounds, thin corneas, high myopia, and steroid use, among others.
What makes the demonstration interesting is how Diaton measures IOP. Instead of an air puff or methods that may require numbing drops and direct contact with the cornea, Diaton measures pressure through the upper eyelid, over the sclera, bypassing the cornea as the measurement pathway.
And notice the scleral lens: the video demonstrates IOP being measured while the scleral lens remains on the eye. Because Diaton does not use the cornea as its measurement pathway, this can offer clinicians another way to assess IOP in scleral-lens patients without removing the lens for the measurement.
