To Grow a Baby is now offering a free breastfeeding support group for the Jacksonville and St. Johns community 🙌🏻

Think of this as a welcoming space to come as you are, connect with other breastfeeding moms, and receive breastfeeding support.

✨ Connect with other breastfeeding moms
✨ Address breastfeeding questions or concerns
✨ Receive a free oral assessment to check for ties
✨ Check how much milk your baby is transferring

Please note:
• Breastfeeding support will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis as time permits
• If you would like a weighted feed, please notify the IBCLC upon arrival and plan to complete a full feeding during group time
• No childcare is provided, but siblings are welcome

🌎🤱🏻World Breastfeeding Week: Cross-Identification Theory & Mutual Connection 💕

In the sacred rhythm of breastfeeding, there is a profound moment many parents recognize: when a baby reaches up and touches their mother’s mouth. This tender gesture may seem small, but some theorists believe it reflects something much deeper — a form of cross-identification.

Cross-identification, a concept originally explored by Dr. Niles Newton, suggests that during breastfeeding, there’s a bidirectional exchange — not just of nutrition and comfort, but of identity and emotional resonance. When a baby touches the mother’s face, especially her mouth, it could be seen as a moment of recognition, reciprocity, and even gifting: the baby ‘gives back’ to the mother, forming a feedback loop of connection. In other words, it’s your baby’s way of saying “thank you.” 💜

During this World Breastfeeding Week, let us honor the sacredness of these beautiful, small moments — the ones where biology, love, and communication silently meet.

🤱🏻In 2019 the CDC reported that less than 25% of babies in the US were exclusively breastfed by 6 months of age, despite the world recommendation to breastfeed to two years or longer.

🤱🏻It is well known that the benefits of breastfeeding are astronomical, seemingly infinite. Science is still uncovering the many benefits that only breastmilk can provide. And yet, so many families do not meet the recommended timeframe.

🤱🏻Why is this? Is it a physical inability? Or is it because they are lacking the education and support to reach their true breastfeeding potential? Families in the US deserve the right to TRUE information about breastfeeding. They deserve the ability to breastfeed their babies!

🤱🏻Let’s work together as healthcare, birth, and lactation professionals to help end the breastfeeding crisis in the US.
