Hi. 👋 Bariatric Surgeon and Obesity Medicine Specialist here.

I spend my days in operating rooms and virtual Bariatrics Dovecclinic watching the same patterns repeat in thousands of different lives. Different backgrounds, different professions, different levels of “discipline”, and yet the same physiology, the same metabolic adaptations, the same relentless biology pushing back against weight loss. That’s not a lack of willpower. That’s a disease process playing out exactly the way diseases do.

I see patients who can follow every rule perfectly and still have their bodies defend a higher weight with hormonal changes, metabolic slowdown, hunger signals that become louder than almost anything else in their life. I see genetics, endocrine pathways, gut hormones, insulin resistance, neurochemical reward loops, and inflammatory changes that mirror what we see in every other chronic disease we treat in medicine.

And here’s the part people outside medicine often miss: obesity behaves exactly like a chronic disease. It relapses. It progresses. It requires treatment. It responds to medical therapy, surgery, behavioral intervention, and long-term management. The evidence is overwhelming, the physiology is measurable, and the outcomes improve when we treat it like the disease it is.

So when someone asks, “Who actually thinks obesity is a disease?” I just wave. Because the answer is anyone who has actually studied it, treated it, and watched what really happens inside the human body.

Sometimes the biggest transformations in life aren’t just about what you lose — they’re about what you gain back.

For a long time I thought this journey was about losing weight. But the truth is, it was really about taking my life back.

Yes, there are numbers attached to this story.

190 pounds down from my highest weight.
RNY gastric bypass • December 6, 2024

High blood pressure reversed.
Blood thinners no longer needed.
Sleep apnea gone and the CPAP in the trash.
So many labs and health markers now back within normal ranges.
Plenty of other mental and physical health issues that once controlled my life either gone or manageable.

The list goes on.

But the things I’m most grateful for aren’t stats.
They’re the everyday moments I didn’t even realize I was missing before.

Being able to sit in a room with friends and feel comfortable in my own skin.

Not worrying about whether I’ll fit somewhere, squeeze through a space, break a chair or step ladder.

Learning to accept compliments instead of brushing them off — and believing them.

Playing with and keeping up with our dogs — being a real dog mom for once.

Having the energy and confidence to truly connect with my husband, my family, and the people I love.

Showing up in my life present, grounded, and stronger in my faith — most of the time. I have to give myself grace, of course.

This journey hasn’t been perfect. Years of obesity and neglect don’t disappear overnight, and there are still things my body carries from that chapter.

And the last 15 months since surgery have included a lot of ongoing repair, and at times even additional hospitalizations or surgeries.

But today those things are manageable.
And more importantly, I’m living a life I once felt completely disconnected from.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way — near or far. I love you all.

As this journey continues, the name I have been using will change from melting.with.mel to mel.keeps.going.

Because that name fits the story a little better.
And that means everything.
