I’ve been seeing more fungal acne in my teen patients this summer… 👀
Despite the name, what we commonly call ‘fungal acne’ is actually Malassezia Folliculitis— an overgrowth of a type of yeast that naturally lives on our skin. It is especially common with teens because increased oil production, excess sweating, and the summer humidity + heat can multiply this yeast inside the hair follicles and contribute to that overgrowth. It can look a lot like traditional acne, but responds better to certain ingredients and requires a different approach. It is key to correct the skin barrier, clear congestion, balance oil production, and kill the yeast activity on the skin, as fungal acne thrives in dry environments and off feeds on oil.
