What does great emergency care look like for an 85-year-old?

It starts with recognizing that older adults often face different challenges than younger patients, from fall risks and mobility concerns to complex medical needs that can affect recovery long after they leave the hospital.

That commitment recently earned Aurora Medical Center - Kenosha Level 2 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians - ACEP, joining a growing network of Advocate Health hospitals dedicated to specialized emergency care for older adults.

"The Geri-ED accreditation program has been instrumental in preparing our health system to care for the needs of a rapidly aging population," shared Christopher Rubach, Senior Services Program Manager. "Identifying vulnerable older adults in the emergency department and connecting them with additional resources contributes to more patients recuperating at home and not needing to return to the ER."

The impact of this work is already being seen across our footprint. In 2024 alone, Advocate Health teammates completed more than 141,000 screenings of older adults to identify risks that could affect recovery, while our hospitals implemented initiatives focused on fall prevention, mobility, care coordination and safer transitions home.

Nationally recognized examples include pharmacy-led fall prevention efforts at Aurora BayCare Medical Center and outcomes at Aurora Medical Center Sheboygan County, where geriatric emergency department best practices contributed to a 38% reduction in 30-day emergency department revisits.

And the momentum continues to grow. This fall, Advocate Health will receive ACEP's Geriatric Emergency System Excellence Award, recognizing the size, impact and success of our geriatric emergency care program.

As we celebrate the Aurora Medical Center - Kenosha team, this designation reflects a shared commitment to helping older adults receive care designed around their unique needs, preserving independence and supporting stronger recoveries. 💙

When 81-year-old Daphne started experiencing digestive issues, she assumed she was dealing with a minor infection or another routine health concern. Instead, testing revealed something she never expected: liver cancer.

Because of her medical history, surgery and chemotherapy weren't the best treatment options.

Daphne's care team, including Aurora Health Care interventional radiologist Dr. Nathan Thompson, recommended Y-90 radioembolization, a minimally invasive treatment that allowed her to return home the very same day.

Just one month later, follow-up imaging brought unimaginable relief, showing no evidence of active liver cancer.

Today, Daphne is looking forward to what matters most — celebrating milestones and getting ready to cheer on her beloved Marquette University Golden Eagles men's basketball team. 💙

Innovation in cancer care is about expanding what's possible for patients.

Dr. Wesley Papenfuss, surgical oncologist and chief of surgery at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, recently spoke with Milwaukee Business Journal about histotripsy and how this breakthrough technology is helping broaden treatment options for patients with liver tumors.

Recovery doesn't end when a patient leaves the hospital.

Jennifer Schomburg, president of Aurora Health Care's Southeast Wisconsin Area and Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, joined community leaders and partners to celebrate the next chapter of Milwaukee County's medical respite program at Phoenix Residential Apartments on Milwaukee's west side.

Aurora Health Care will be the first health system to formally contract with Milwaukee County for 20 medical respite beds at the new location, helping ensure patients experiencing homelessness have a safe place to recover after hospitalization while connecting to ongoing care and supportive services.

Medical respite programs provide transitional housing and coordinated support for individuals who are medically stable enough to leave the hospital but do not have a safe environment for recovery. These programs help patients heal, manage medications, attend follow-up appointments, access behavioral health services and connect with housing resources that promote long-term stability and improved health outcomes.

This milestone proudly reflects our unwavering commitment to addressing the social factors that influence health and the power of partnership in creating adaptive pathways to recovery. Thank you to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Jim Mathy, Anthony Kazee, Elmer Moore, Frank Cumberbatch, Michael Byrd and the many organizations working together to help meet a critical need in our communities. 💙

When Charley was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he was told a full prostate removal would likely be the best path forward.

But as a dedicated craftsman who's spent more than three decades creating one-of-a-kind furniture pieces now featured in museums across the country, he wasn't ready to stop searching for answers.

That's when he connected with Aurora Health Care urologist Dr. Zachary Kozel. After additional testing, Dr. Kozel determined Charley was a candidate for focal therapy, a minimally invasive treatment that targets only the cancerous portion of the prostate while preserving healthy surrounding tissue.

Charley underwent the outpatient procedure and was back in his studio doing what he loves just three days later.

Today, nearly two years after treatment, his follow-up testing continues to show no signs of recurrence, sharing, "I couldn't have asked for a better outcome."

Aurora Health Care and Advocate Health recognize that for a community to truly thrive, people need more than healthcare alone.

The name ‘The Beacon' directly our Near West Side residents, both serving as powerful symbols of guiding lights. It speaks to Milwaukee's rich history, where lighthouses and beacons have long served as important landmarks, helping people navigate and find their way safely: the embodiment of what our community health and wellness hub will be.

The Beacon will bring together local, trusted local partners who are helping address the real-life, everyday challenges that can impact health, opportunity and well-being — challenges that many take for granted.

Community Smiles Dental - Wisconsin will open its very first Milwaukee location within the walls of The Beacon, expanding access to preventive and restorative dental care for children, patients with special healthcare needs and expectant mothers. The team will provide everything from annual exams and cleanings to fillings, sealants and dental health education, allowing families to access care closer to home.

Goodwill Greater Milwaukee & Chicago will help connect neighbors to workforce development and employment services, including career exploration, job training, employment coaching and job placement support, creating pathways to economic mobility and long-term stability.

Additional community partners, including Guest House of Milwaukee and Legal Action of Wisconsin, will expand access to housing stability and medical-legal advocacy services, helping individuals and families secure and maintain housing, navigate legal challenges, access public benefits and overcome barriers that can make it harder to stay healthy and financially secure.

Together with maternal health and family support programs, healthy aging services and community reentry and transition support, these community collaborations reflect what The Beacon is meant to be: a safe, inclusive and welcoming place where our neighbors can find support, build stability and access opportunities that help them succeed for generations to come.

For the residents who grew up here. For the families who have spent decades calling Milwaukee's Near West Side home. For the neighbors who never stopped believing in what this community could become.

The Beacon was built with your voices at the center.

More than 1,000 community members helped shape the plan for our first-of-its-kind health and wellness hub, sharing their experiences, priorities and hopes for the neighborhood.

The Near West Side, where The Beacon will be located, has a 13-year life expectancy gap compared to neighborhoods just five miles away.

We're working hard to change that.

Today, we celebrate a major milestone in The Beacon's $50 million investment by Aurora Health Care and Advocate Health by announcing the programs, services and community partners that will transform this historic building into a place where neighbors can receive inclusive, accessible care, access essential resources and explore new opportunities, all in one location.

When it opens in spring 2027, you'll find:
✓ Resources to help prevent and manage chronic conditions and support healthy aging
✓ Support for new and expectant parents
✓ Community fitness classes
✓ Intentional spaces designed for gathering, learning and connection
✓ Workforce development and employment services
✓ Help with housing stability, medical-legal advocacy, reentry and transition support
✓ Nutrition education and access to healthy food
✓ Free community Wi-Fi

And so much more. The Beacon will usher in a new generation of wellness and good health by restoring a landmark that has long been part of the Milwaukee’s story, now shaped alongside the very individuals and families who call the Near West Side home. We can’t wait to welcome our neighbors to the future community garden, reading nook and library, demonstration kitchen, the city’s first pharmacy kiosk and collaboration spaces that will allow residents to gather and grow stronger – together.

Built with the community. For the community.
