Seven years ago today I captured an image that, to this day, I still can't believe. And I will share it every single May 2nd, because it's one of, if not the most special image that I've ever shot.
I know that many of you know the story, but it's one that is so serendipitous, it's almost like something out of a movie. Storms were forecasted overnight, and I had planned to stay up to see what happened with them. But I fell asleep on the couch, only to be awoken in the middle of the night by a crack of lighting that sounded like a whip from the heavens and booming thunder.
The first thing on my mind wasn't the storms...it was that I left the garage door open. I ran outside to shut it, checked the radar, and saw a purple (yes purple, not red or orange) cell moving right towards the city.
I grabbed my gear, jumped in my car, and raced downtown. I didn't know where I was going to go, I just knew that I needed to get into the city quickly. I decided on the West End, and just seven minutes after I got there, this happened.
A lightning bolt shot out of the low clouds, split, and hit the rivers by the Point. I've seen lightning hit buildings and towers, but I've never seen an ACTUAL cloud to ground bolt in Pittsburgh where it struck the river. Just insane.
You can actually see lightning coming back OUT OF the river (called upward streamers) as the energy didn't fully dissipate so it turned back out of the water.
This image is so special to me, and means just so, so much. It was on Good Morning America the next, and so many of you have shared it over the years. I apologize if you've seen this image a bunch of times, but it's not just some random panorama...it's a moment in time that I can't believe I witnessed.
