When my mom had her first child, the doctor never asked her preferences; he simply sedated her. When she woke up, her baby was already born. As my parents were preparing to leave that town, the doctor’s parting words were to request a “pain-free birth” from the next one. With that advice, she went on to have three more children: two through natural childbirth without medication and one via cesarean section. To this day, she recalls her first experience was the worst way to bring a baby into the world.

On May 21 at 6:00 PM, the Illinois Valley Childbirth Collective will be hosting Meet the Midwife - Angela Reidner CNM, a nurse midwife many families in our community already know and trust.

We’ll be gathering in a beautiful space in downtown La Salle for an evening of conversation, learning, and connection. Come ask questions about pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the differences between hospital and home birth experiences.

Birth workers are especially encouraged to attend — we would love to support and promote the services you offer to local families. Partners are also welcome this time, especially if they have questions or want to learn more about the birth experience.

Today is Midwives Day—May 5th! If there’s one profession I hold especially close to my heart, it’s midwifery. These women are truly extraordinary.

They give their time, their skill, and even their precious night hours to care for laboring mothers—and they do it with genuine love and dedication. I would not be the person I am today without the wisdom and kindness of my own midwives—Jeanne Bazille, Kim Garret, Jane Kirby, and Karen Bachman—as well as the midwives-in-training who became dear friends and brought so much love into my life.

Motherhood itself is a privilege, and it’s an even greater honor to walk alongside mothers in their journey.

To all midwives—congratulations and thank you. You are a true gift, and your work blesses this world in more ways than can be measured.
