Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. Heartland Therapeutic Riding is a therapeutic riding center serving children and adults with disabilities in the Kansas City area, since 1978.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. was founded because of the determination and drive of one mother who refused to accept that an individual with a disability should be excluded from horseback riding, because of their diagnosis. Literally proving where there is a will, there is a way. In 1977, Jean Baum established Heartland Therapeutic Riding after horseback riding was suggested as a potentially

helpful (future) activity for her nine-month old daughter, who had special needs. Jean learned more about the benefits of therapeutic riding from Lida McGowan, who founded the Cheff Center for therapeutic riding, in Minnesota. After attending the lecture, Jean was convinced that the Kansas City area would greatly benefit from this type of center. After discovering a staunch opposition to the very idea of individuals with disabilities riding horses, Jean established the first therapeutic riding center in Kansas City. was one of the first therapeutic riding centers in the country, and has earned the status of PATH, Intl. Premier Accredited Center. Heartland currently serves more than 100 incredible riders and has a team of more than 120 amazing volunteers, yet we have never forgotten all of the hard work, determination and dedication that it took to get here. We are committed to helping individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities and therapies. We strive to change lives, one ride at a time.

💙 Bittersweet News from Heartland Therapeutic Riding 💙

At the end of our spring session, Heartland officially retired one of our herd members, Lizzie, from the program.

For nearly seven years, Lizzie has been a special part of the Heartland Therapeutic Riding family. She has helped countless riders build confidence, learn new skills, and create lasting memories through our Adaptive Riding program.

Over the past several months, Lizzie let us know she was ready for a slower pace and a quieter life. We're happy to share that she has moved to a wonderful home where she will be loved, well cared for, and will continue to bring joy and happiness to her new family.

While we miss seeing her every day, we're so excited for this next chapter and the retirement she has more than earned.

Please join us in wishing Lizzie a happy retirement and all the best in her new home. ❤️🐴

💙🐴 Educational Wednesdays: Adaptive Riding Equipment

Did you know adaptive riding lessons often use specialized equipment to help riders feel safe, supported, and successful on horseback? Every rider has different needs, so we use a variety of adaptive equipment to create the best experience possible ✨

Some of the equipment we utilize includes:

🔹 Saddles
Different saddle styles can provide extra support, stability, and comfort depending on the rider’s needs and goals, or can provide more opportunity for feeling the movement of the horse.

🔹 Reins
From loop reins to rainbow reins and adaptive handles, different rein styles help riders communicate more effectively and build independence while riding.

🔹 Safety Handles & Support Equipment
Some riders benefit from grab handles or additional support while working on balance and confidence in the saddle.

🔹 Mounting Lift
Our adaptive lift safely assists riders onto the horse. This allows individuals with limited mobility or physical challenges the opportunity to ride comfortably and safely.

Our goal is always to match each rider with the equipment that helps them succeed while making riding accessible and FUN 🐴✨

🐴 Educational Wednesday: The Heart of Our Program — Volunteers!

Our volunteers play a HUGE role in making our lessons safe, successful, and fun for every rider. Without them, our program would not be possible!

Two of the most important volunteer roles during lessons are Leaders and Sidewalkers.

✨Leaders are soley responsible for the horse. Their job is guiding and controlling the horse during the lesson. They help maintain pace, direction, and focus. They also help with prepping for the ride and untacking at the end of the lesson.

✨Sidewalkers are responsible for the rider. They walk alongside the rider to provide physical and emotional support when needed. They help riders build confidence, stay balanced, and feel secure while learning new skills in the saddle.

Our volunteers do so much more than assist in lessons — they build friendships, encourage riders, and help create a positive environment where everyone can succeed!

Interested in becoming part of our team? We are always looking for caring and dedicated volunteers! If you would like to volunteer with our program, please submit an application on our website or follow the link! 🐎
