Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. Heartland Therapeutic Riding is a therapeutic riding center serving children and adults with disabilities in the Kansas City area, since 1978.

Heartland Therapeutic Riding, Inc. was founded because of the determination and drive of one mother who refused to accept that an individual with a disability should be excluded from horseback riding, because of their diagnosis. Literally proving where there is a will, there is a way. In 1977, Jean Baum established Heartland Therapeutic Riding after horseback riding was suggested as a potentially

helpful (future) activity for her nine-month old daughter, who had special needs. Jean learned more about the benefits of therapeutic riding from Lida McGowan, who founded the Cheff Center for therapeutic riding, in Minnesota. After attending the lecture, Jean was convinced that the Kansas City area would greatly benefit from this type of center. After discovering a staunch opposition to the very idea of individuals with disabilities riding horses, Jean established the first therapeutic riding center in Kansas City. was one of the first therapeutic riding centers in the country, and has earned the status of PATH, Intl. Premier Accredited Center. Heartland currently serves more than 100 incredible riders and has a team of more than 120 amazing volunteers, yet we have never forgotten all of the hard work, determination and dedication that it took to get here. We are committed to helping individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities and therapies. We strive to change lives, one ride at a time.

Join us in welcoming Luna to our Adaptive Riding Program🎉

Luna is a 13-year-old Appaloosa mare joining our Adaptive Riding Program, and we’re so excited to have her in the barn!

Before coming to Heartland, Luna worked at a lesson barn helping her riders learn to jump over poles. These days, she’s traded in jumping for a new adventure—guiding our riders through arena obstacles with her calm, steady stride.

She may not have the flashy Appaloosa spots everyone expects, but look closely and you’ll find something special—tiny speckles on her lips and sprinkled along her back (we think that makes her extra unique ✨).

We can’t wait for everyone to meet Luna here at Heartland Therapeutic Riding!

🐴📚 Educational Wednesday: Arena Care Matters

When people think about horse care, they often think about feeding, grooming, or veterinary care. But did you know that caring for the arena is also an important part of keeping our horses healthy and comfortable?

At Heartland, we work and water our arena 2–3 times each week to maintain safe and consistent footing for both horses and riders.

🔹 Why do we drag or work the arena?
As horses travel around the arena, the footing can become compacted, uneven, or develop deeper spots. Dragging the arena helps redistribute the footing, creating a more even surface. Consistent footing helps horses move comfortably and reduces unnecessary strain on their joints, tendons, and ligaments.

🔹 Why do we water the arena?
Water helps control dust and keeps the footing from becoming too loose or dry. Excessive dust can be irritating to both horses and humans, especially during lessons. Proper moisture also helps maintain the footing's structure, creating a safer surface for riding.

🔹 How does this help our therapy horses?
Our horses work hard to support riders of all abilities. Good footing helps them maintain balance, move more naturally, and stay comfortable while carrying riders. It also creates a more predictable surface, which is especially important in adaptive riding where consistency and safety are key.

Just like athletes perform best on well-maintained fields and courts, horses perform best on properly maintained footing. Arena care may happen behind the scenes, but it plays a big role in keeping our horses healthy and our riders safe. 💛

🐴📚 Educational Wednesday: Understanding Our Programs

People often hear about horses helping individuals with disabilities and wonder, "What's the difference between all of your programs?" While all of our services involve horses, each program has a unique purpose and approach.

🔹 Adaptive Riding
Adaptive riding lessons are taught by a certified therapeutic riding instructor and focus on developing riding skills while supporting physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Riders learn horsemanship and riding skills in a safe, supportive environment while building confidence, independence, balance, and coordination.

🔹 Occupational Therapy Utilizing Hippotherapy
Hippotherapy is a skilled therapy service provided by a licensed occupational therapist who uses the movement of the horse as a treatment tool. The horse's movement helps address specific therapy goals such as balance, posture, strength, coordination, sensory processing, and motor planning. While participants may be on a horse, the focus is therapy—not learning to ride.

🔹 Equine-Assisted Counseling
Equine-assisted counseling combines mental health counseling with interactions with horses. Sessions are typically focused on emotional growth, self-awareness, communication, coping skills, relationship building, and processing life challenges. Activities may take place on the ground, allowing clients to learn through their experiences and interactions with the horses.

💛 Although each program looks a little different, they all share the same goal: helping participants build confidence, develop new skills, and experience the unique connection between humans and horses.

At Heartland Therapeutic Riding, we are proud to offer multiple pathways for growth, healing, and independence through the power of horses.
