October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This month is about recognizing the value, talent, and contributions of people with disabilities and looking at the barriers that can stand in the way of employment.
In 2025, just 22.8% of people with disabilities were employed, compared with 65.2% of people without disabilities.
And before you say, “people with disabilities don’t want to work,” the reality is that people with disabilities do work, and many more want the opportunity to work. The question is whether workplaces are creating genuine opportunities for people to participate, contribute, and succeed.
And remember, not all disabilities are visible. That’s why listening, providing accommodations when needed, and creating cultures where people feel safe asking for what they need matters.
So going forward, let’s hire more people with disabilities, remove barriers, listen to employees, and build workplaces rooted in trust, accessibility, and inclusion.
At Minds Matter, people with lived brain injury experience and disabilities are encouraged to apply. What about your company? 💜
