The off-season isn't time off. It's the building phase.
Summer break started, the schedule filled up, and madness ensued. Camps, trips, activities to keep the kids busy. Then camps ended, practices started again, and just like that, everyone's back to the grind.
So here's the honest question for parents: did your athlete actually build something this summer, or did they just move on to the next level of participation?
There's a real cost to skipping the off-season. Every fall we see kids who grew over the summer, picked up a few more aches and pains, and are now struggling to be the athlete they were last season. Higher goals, higher expectations, standing on an unstable foundation. Sooner or later, performance drops and injury risk climbs.
What hurts most is that this stretch of an athlete's life is the single biggest window for physical development, and it gets spent on skills and drills that are quick to ripen and rot.
Our Director of Athletic Training, Dennis Dolan, MS, ATC, broke down what a real off-season actually looks like week by week, and what it honestly takes from a family to pull it off.
