I am fully immersed in this season of discomfort.

So I got curious.

I went back in my photos - I have over 15k on my phone- and I wondered what pictures/ memes had caught my attention in September of 2019.

Wanna know what feels uncomfortable - embracing yourself fully as you are with all the flaws and phenomenalness. Wanna know what feels uncomfortable- giving yourself compassion and empathy. Wanna know what feels uncomfortable- setting and maintain boundaries.

So I shared a few.

Damn.

S**t.

F**k.

Look at those themes and patterns. Healing. Empathy and compassion. Boundaries. Been around since 2019….still ever present in 2026.

In this moment of life I truly feel in my bones…in my soul I have stepped fully into my authenticity.

I am a middle aged 50 year old woman. I have the thinning hair that’s gray to prove it and the wrinkles dancing across my face that tell the story of a life lived with smiles and laughter.

I have a lived experience some could only dream of and some could never survive.

I have the wisdom of discernment and the power of intuition. They are magnificent and lead me through uncertainty.

I see in others, what they cannot yet see and I get to be a part of something beautiful as mindsets shift, finding voice and authenticity takes hold and life unfolds.

Honoring my boundaries has given me more safety than I could ever imagine and therefore safety is wherever I meander.

Discomfort is just like any other feeling- so many levels of intensity… and as we level up in life, guess what…the challenges level up too!

May today find you in a space of curiosity as you go about your day.

Being dysregulated is a natural state of being human.

However, being stuck living in dysregualtion is a sign of a wonky nervous system and requires time and attention to help your nervous system seek regulation.

And for many people whose physical environment is not safe- poverty, crime, emotional neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect, racism, sexism, and war- to name a few, the ability for their nervous system to be regulated = moving up and down from green to red and then red to green, throughout the day, every day, all day long…….is not possible or accessible. This does not mean you are broken, rather it means, your nervous system doesn’t have a felt sense of safety.

And for adults who grew up in these unsafe environments, their nervous systems can be wonky for years until the learn the tools on how to develop a felt sense of safety for their nervous system and widen their window of tolerance.

Our environmental safety is perhaps the most important safety that we can feel, so in order to change the felt sense of safety in a community, it requires a change within the community to address those social issues listed above.

As you go about your day, consider this: which color represents you most of the day? Where you work- which color would describe the environment most of the day? What are the social issues that affect your life, the environment where you work and the environment where you live?

What is one thing you can do today, that might help you be in the green? Luckily I have an answer. 😊

Here is what helps us move towards green- green spaces and green nervous systems. 😊

Nature- sitting under a tree Lionel is my favorite tree and he’s in my backyard

Music- fun, carefree feel good b***y shaking songs - my favorite is Walking on Sunshine

Movement - Yoga, Pilates, dancing, walking, riding a bicycle-for pleasure not cardiac exercise

Animals- dogs, cats, horses- mammals have the same nervous system as humans 😊

Breathing with intention- making your exhales longer than your inhales- lowers your heart rate and blood pressure which naturally helps your body move from yellow toward green (this is science and biology not therapy)

Another green nervous system humans or 4 legged pets who are resting, playful, gentle…

So perhaps you might go on an adventure this long weekend which was created to rest…find a green space or green nervous system and just notice how you are feeling after being there for about 15 mins.

It’s ok if it feels weird or awkward….its new and the nervous system needs time to adjust its window of tolerance because, if you have been living in yellow or red, being in green can feel very uncomfortable because your window of tolerance for green is small.

Use these amazing pics to begin helping you widen your window of tolerance for green….again another amazing TikTok find the pics listed below!

My challenge to you this weekend is: rest, relax and get curious about developing safety. Find green space or green nervous system to hang out in for about 15 mins and then go back to previous activity. Wait about 45 mins and then go back into the green space and give it another 15 mins in there noticing…. Look at YOU doing hard things!!

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

Being a therapist su***de is always on my mind and heart. I have worked with many clients over the last 10 years that have felt these really big feelings.

I have lost 3 friends to su***de. 3. To some people that might seem like a small number and to me that number seems larger than Antarctica.

I miss the presence and the energy of my three friends.

I miss the half smile of my first friend who taught me the value of not taking s**t off of anyone. He was in his 40’s and I was in my 20’s. We worked together and he really walked through life owning it and enjoying it. His personality was as big as the Grand Canyon. He adored his family….he was just the most amazing human. And his stories…..God they were funny and entertaining.

I miss the laugh of my second friend. I also look back and sometimes I am upset with myself as I talked with her the week before she left this earth and it was as if the old beautiful and funny ways had returned. Her eyes were bright and she radiated love. I mistakenly thought her treatment was working and even asked. What her death taught me was that the masks we wear are sometimes so ever powerful even those with great abilities to see, are not able to see through the mask.

I miss the connection my third friend brought to our world with the people he worked with and for. I miss the way he would stand in his truth and knowledge about things. I miss his laughter too. I was not as close to my third friend as I was my first two and yet his absence still feels as big as theirs.

Desperation can make us do lots of things. Despair, loneliness, hopelessness. They are all present in these moments. And I believe shame is present too. What I know for sure is that talking with a trusted person who can provide solid clinical help is paramount. What I know for sure is that thoughts are just like farts in the wind. Thoughts and feelings are messengers they are not facts. Working with a therapist can help you to begin seeing things differently and that’s the first step in changing how we feel.

If you find yourself having thoughts of no longer being here please call 988. Please remember you matter, your presence matters, and we need you to stay.

Another great TikTok find on Therapy Tok!!

Clear is kind has been a motto for me over the last year.

I have found when I approach a difficult topic or need to have a hard conversation, I keep in my present awareness that being clear is kind, and allowing the other person the opportunity to ask questions to clarify that conversations open.

Leading with compassion and empathy are paramount.

Consider using these principles when you need to have your next hard conversation and remember…it’s ok to have things written on paper that you can read from and keep your points in order. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Today is National Grief Awareness Day.

Grief has been ever present in my life since the death of my mom in 2023.

Before and after my mom’s death I was very scared on how grief would transform me as I had slowly and intentionally created a life and walked a healing journey that I loved. I loved me in 2023 and who I had become through the hard work, tears, acceptance and surrender. That version of me didn’t want to let go…let go of my mom who had been my anchor my entire life, let go of certainty, let go of comfort, let go of life.

2026 and now I look back toward that version of me who was scared, alone, and so very very very sad. I have so much compassion and empathy for her and her struggles. I cried every day for the first year to and from work, after I got home from work and sat in my backyard in my rocking chair while drumming, pulling weeds in my grief garden, planting flowers, trying to navigate impossible moments and making decisions without her guidance on people I loved but didn’t really know….she did all of that. And grief was right by her side.

Captain Marvel is one of my favorite heroines. In fact she’s one of my parts and I love her so much. She’s brave and courageous and intelligent and hilarious. She knows her worth, she knows her capabilities and she doesn’t take s**t from anyone. And….before she became Captain Marvel, she had to sit with grief and accept the ways she had abandoned herself to other peoples ideals, plans, and expectations. She had to sit with the grief of losing her mentor and her compass. She had to grieve. Once she grieved, grief cleared out space and within that expansion something within her transformed. And her rebirth and transformation was magical and powerful.

Creating Willow and Ash, which started in August of 2023, was born from my grief and pain and suffering. Honestly sitting here today, 3 years later, it was a vehicle to allow me to work through grief. And from my grief I created exactly what my body, nervous system and soul needed to help me move forward and continue on in life. I speak in metaphors, I create spaces of healing and safety using metaphors through art and color and sentimental objects that are specifically placed in just the right spot to evoke a thought…feeling or curiosity.

I have placed a lot of my grief into Willow and Ash and allowed it to be transformed into something….beautiful, because grief is simply love with nowhere to go. ❤️❤️❤️

And a year ago someone whom I value very deeply in my life, someone who has never led me wrong, challenged me in dark moments to see things…differently…gave me a simple task- find m people or things that you can do things with that your mom used to do with you….and see what happens.

And it clicked instantly….just like the moment Captain Marvel is fighting for her life in an impossible situation- that it has always been within me the whole time. All that was needed was to allow….accept….surrender to the grief and see where she leads me.

The death of my mom allowed the possibility of Willow and Ash to be born. Had she not died, I don’t think the Willow and Ash of 2026 would be the way it is and the way it’s transforming into something….I’m not quite sure of….and excited to watch unfold. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

My challenge to those of you grieving today the loss of a parent, brother, sister, child, health, relationship….whatever is missing…may you find the time to honor what was and allow what is….and get curious about what’s next. Do it afraid, do it scared, do it uncomfortable, do it not knowing …. Because on the other side of that fear I believe is something more beautiful than one can understand in this moment of grieving but grief knows….shes always known.

Consent.

This is a powerful word and it deserves our full attention.

Consent is not just about sexual intimacy.

Consent is interwoven throughout the fabric of our life…we just need to get good at finding it.

Examples:

I went to the eye doctor in early August and they asked consent to touch my head and maneuver my eye for a portion of the exam.

I was at another doctor’s appt and they asked if they could take my picture. I did not give consent. They looked perplexed and I said, taking my picture isn’t necessary. You took it last year. My answer is no.

I asked a family member if we could have an important conversation a few weeks ago and what might be a good day and time.

Working with horses, I am seeking consent all the time. I love to pet and brush the horses. Some horses love this interaction with anyone and some horses are not ok with this level of contact. So showing the brush and asking for consent it important. All creatures need the ability to give consent. For our 4 legged friends we see consent given or not given in their behaviors and body language.

In session I will ask clients if we can high 5 when big moments have occurred. Some clients say no. Some clients say yes. Always consent is present.

Consent is something we need to teach our young as soon as they can understand. Especially with body autonomy = getting to decide who touches your body and who doesn’t.

And in emergency situations, sometimes strangers are touching our bodies to help us, and even though our brains know they are helping our nervous system does not and it considers this to be a threat.

So maybe this week, you might consider ways you can bring the opportunity to seek consent.

I found this TikTok and thought the original creator JB Therapy nailed it. So…I wanted to share.

Learning how to sit with uncomfortable feelings is part of experiencing and exploring a regulated nervous system.

Here is a step by step guide and it’s the method I use in my personal life and the one I teach to my clients.

Feelings are valid and every thought attached to a feeling doesn’t always mean it’s a fact.

Feelings and thoughts are like farts in the wind. Some are stinky and linger, some have no smell and just drift away and some are powerful and can take out a room of people…even with the windows open. Eventually the fart disappears….and if we take the time to do what JB Therapy has written…well your whole experience with feelings and sensations might just be different….and choosing something different is how you begin to change the old story on repeat.

I went to the woods in New Hampshire to learn how to facilitate groups using equine assisted psychotherapy. I returned different….seeing things from a new perspective of comfort vs discomfort when in this season of my life discomfort seems to be taking up residence with grief.

When your trauma brain activates and you begin to feel stressed and overwhelmed….what can you do?

Well, below are some pics that represent what your trauma brain is doing and how to manage overwhelm, stress, and the need to control.

Sometimes it’s best to have ideas or coping strategies on hand so you are not trying to think about what to do in the moment, because when our trauma brain is activated our thinking brain goes offline.

The most important things we can do for ourselves when trauma brain activates and we feel all kinds of ways and things because of the words actions and experiences is to give ourselves self compassion. It’s vital to helping work through shame which dominates the conversation we usually have with ourselves when we are getting our thinking brain back online.

May today find you with the ability to find your breath, steady your feet and move your body in kind and loving ways that honor your nervous system’s needs.
