When you wake up with a stuffy nose, a cough, and a scratchy throat, it is natural to want a quick fix. Many people come into the clinic asking for antibiotics, thinking it will clear everything right up.

But antibiotics only kill bacteria.

Most common colds, flus, and winter bugs are actually caused by viruses. Antibiotics cannot hurt a virus. In fact, taking them when you don't need them can upset your stomach and make it harder for your body to fight off actual bacterial infections later on.

Instead, the best remedies are often the simplest ones. Lots of rest, plenty of fluids, and over-the-counter medicine to help you stay comfortable while your body does its job.

[Reminder: Always consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.]

When you or your kids wake up feeling under the weather, the last thing you want to do is figure out where to go. A lot of families default to the emergency room, but that often means facing long waiting rooms and high bills for things that aren't actually life-threatening.

We love keeping our Oxford neighbors healthy, so here is a quick guide to help you decide what's best:

When to head straight to the ER:

- Chest pain or pressure
- Severe trouble breathing
- Major injuries or sudden numbness

When to walk right into Ole Town Med:

- Sinus infections, coughs, and sore throats
- Minor cuts that might need a few stitches
- Sprains, strains, and minor bumps

Our goal is to get you feeling better quickly, safely, and without the stress of an ER wait. You don't need an appointment, just walk right in and let our team take care of you.

[Gentle Reminder: Always call 911 or head to the nearest emergency room if you are facing a life-threatening medical emergency.]

If you plan on spending the weekend hiking the South Campus Trails or playing in the backyard, you'll probably encounter a few Mississippi bugs. Ticks are incredibly common this time of year, and there are a lot of old remedies out there about how to remove them.

Trying to suffocate a tick with nail polish, rubbing alcohol, or petroleum jelly is a myth!

In fact, irritating the tick can actually cause it to release more fluids into your skin, which increases your risk of infection.

The safest, easiest way to remove a tick is simple:

1. Use a clean pair of fine-tipped tweezers.
2. Grab the tick as close to your skin's surface as possible.
3. Pull straight up with steady, even pressure.
4. Clean the area thoroughly with soap and water.

If you can't get the whole tick out, or if you notice a spreading rash or a fever in the days after, seek your professional health care provider.

Mississippi summers are beautiful, but phew... that June heat doesn't play around! 🥵

Whether you are spending your Saturday morning walking around the Oxford Community Market, heading out to Sardis Lake, or just working in the yard, staying hydrated is everything right now.

A lot of us wait until we are completely parched to grab a glass of water. But did you know that feeling thirsty is actually one of the last signs of dehydration?

Keep an eye out for these sneaky early warning signs:

- Feeling suddenly tired or sluggish
- A nagging headache that won't go away
- Feeling a little dizzy when you stand up fast

To beat the heat, try swapping out one of your daily sweet teas or coffees for a tall glass of water with an electrolyte packet. Your body will thank you!

Gentle Reminder: This information is for educational purposes only. If you or a loved one are experiencing severe heat exhaustion, confusion, or a high fever from the sun, please seek immediate emergency care.

Woke up feeling under the weather? When you or your kiddo needs to see a provider, the last thing you want to do is wait days for an appointment.

Life moves fast, especially during the busy summer months. Between sudden bug bites, stubborn sinus infections, or stomach bugs that seem to come out of nowhere, health hiccups happen.

We offer same-day care right here at Ole Town Med to help you get answers and relief quickly. Think of us as your neighborhood go-to for all those unexpected, non-emergency health bumps in the road.

Our clinic is designed to feel human, warm, and welcoming. We treat everything from earaches and strep throat to minor cuts and allergies.

Before the summer calendar fills up with pool days, lake trips, and family vacations, let’s cross one big thing off your to-do list… school, camp, and sports physicals.

Most camps and school athletic programs require a quick health check before your kiddos can participate. Instead of waiting until August when the back-to-school rush hits and appointments are hard to find, you can get it done right now in a calm, stress-free environment.

At Ole Town Med, we make physicals simple and easy. We’ll check your child's growth, vision, and vital signs to make sure they are safe, healthy, and ready to clear the field, court, or camp trails.

Our team loves seeing our local Oxford students thrive, and we promise to make the visit quick and comfortable for both you and your child.

Bring their required school or camp forms with you, and we will take care of the rest!

June is Men's Health Month. Are the men in your life actually taking care of themselves?

Every June, we shine a light on men's health. Not just physical health, but mental health, stress, sleep, and the habit of actually asking for help when something feels off.

We have a quick update about our clinic hours. 🚨

Starting this weekend, Ole Town Med is switching over to our summer schedule. Our physical clinic building will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

But don't worry, we are still here to support you when you need us!

We know that minor illnesses don't take the weekend off. That’s why we are offering telehealth visits for our established patients on Saturdays from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

If you’re already a patient with us and wake up with a sudden sinus issue, a minor bug, or a quick medical question, you can skip the travel and chat with our team right from the comfort of your own couch.

Our regular weekday hours are staying exactly the same, so you can still find us in the clinic Monday through Friday.

Thank you all for being such an incredible part of our community. We hope you have a safe, happy, and relaxing weekend!
