As someone who’s been in the medical world for 29 years, I’ve seen many facets of the system. From in patient neurology to NICU to ortho and so much more.

I don’t interact much anymore with our conventional system but I recently had to with an ER trip that was like an episode out of MASH.

I’ll spare all the details because everything is fine now but it made me really contemplate my own mortality and the next 30 years of my life as I eventually enter a geriatric era myself.

The experience made me feel sad. Scared. Confused. Angry.

In a society so focused on youth and beauty and aesthetics…this will all fade at some point and then what?

We deserve to do better and care for those who are our elders. Without them we wouldn’t be here.

That’s all.

Just sitting here contemplating the next few decades.

I was at the gym today.

To my left, college boys with their floppy mop haircuts flexing their muscles in the mirror.

To my right, young college girls with their cinched waists and tight buns wearing matching Alos.

Then I look back and see an elderly couple walking slowly on side by side treadmills. Trying their best to walk.

I look at the midlife guys and gals and see dad bods and women hiding their midsections.

Everyone trying to shift their health and body composition the best they could.

Been taking care of my elderly mother the past few days and aging and frailty and mortality is hitting harder than it has in a long time.

Makes me want to keep this body going, strong and mobile for as long and as best I can.

Humbling. Nostalgic. Grief. Sadness. All while staying grateful.

Aging isn’t for the faint of heart.

Have you ever heard the term “menodivorce”? Yes, it’s a thing and it’s being seen by the 70% of women between 45-55 years old leaving their long term relationships.

Hormonal changes, sleep issues, old stale patterns, body composition changes and how we view ourselves in our changing bodies.

Less intimacy, less connection = more distance.

I know so many of my female friends and patients that are in this space right now. It’s definitely an epidemic and marriage crisis.

What’s your experience?

Ladies that are people pleasers, let me ask you 2 questions….

Is it hard for you to say NO?
Is it hard for you to have boundaries?

I learned recently that by saying NO, you are actually honoring your own self care. You are honoring your own needs. For your own nervous system regulation and safety, holding your boundaries steadfast and saying no, doesn’t actually hurt you.

It empowers you.

It might hurt the ones you say NO to but that can’t be your concern.

Perimenopause has given me some courage that I never thought I had. Not courage in the traditional sense of being challenged but in the sense of saying “no, that challenge doesn’t feel right or safe for me so I’m not going to walk into the fire willingly”.

Aging really is wisdom. Aging really is power.

I’m glad I learned this despite it being hard, saying NO is actually saying YES to yourself.

If you deal with heightened anxiety and you’re perimenopausal, go with magnesium glycinate. It encourages relaxation and boosts GABA in the brain.

This one setting on your Apple Watch can help regulate you when your heading down a perimenopausal anxiety rabbit hole…

What conversations are you having with your body? On a deep cellular level?

Are you telling it to start a fire? Start a war? Be upset? Encouraging growth where there should be none?

Are you even aware of the dialogue you are having without speaking?

Our cells hold deep primal knowing of how to heal. How to recover. How to detox. How to stay alive.

Every food choice you make turns switches on or off.

Every bite you take is a dialogue to heal or harm.

What are your conversations?

The game of golf will forever be a mind f*ck. I wish I could now dance into existence breaking 90!

And yes, the minimalist shoe crowd is going to have thoughts. Zero-drop and barefoot-style shoes can build intrinsic foot strength over time, but during an active flare, removing structural support just increases strain on tissue that’s already compromised.

Perimenopause adds another layer here. Estrogen supports collagen synthesis and connective tissue integrity, so declining estrogen reduces the fascia’s tolerance for the same load it handled years ago.

If you’re dealing with plantar fasciitis, drop your favorite shoe to wear in the comments.

I know for me, the body composition changes I’m seeing in perimenopause are real.

They are hard.

I see changes that make me sad. Mad. Angry. Confused.

I’m doing “everything right” but my physical shape hasn’t gotten the memo.

When I have negative self thoughts come up that are hurtful, I use this technique to reframe and change my internal narrative.

This isn’t about forcing yourself to love every change.

It’s about finding a little more peace in the body you’re in, right now.

This body is navigating a huge transition, and being a little kinder to it is a powerful first step.
