A new era of tumor testing may be on the horizon. In an approach known as functional precision medicine, an individual patient’s tumor cells are tested with different cancer drugs to identify the best potential, personalized treatment options. Here, our Curious Dr. George asks Anthony M. Magliocco, MD, FRCPC, FCAP, about how the role of pathologists—doctors who analyze patients’ tissue samples—might evolve as the field advances. Dr. Magliocco is a professor of oncology and pathology at the University of Central Florida and CEO and founder of Protean BioDiagnostics, which offers cancer diagnostic testing services.
