Dr. Robert Chang is shaping the future of ophthalmology by testing AI use cases across research, education, and clinical care to drive successful implementation in medicine.

He was among the first to pilot AI virtual scribing — a technology that "listens" to patient-physician conversations so doctors can spend less time on paperwork and more time focusing on the patient.

An exciting step for the future of gene therapy—read about the Sun Lab’s promising new gene activation tool in this feature from Stanford Medicine. ⬇️

Stanford Medicine scientists developed an ultrasmall and versatile gene activator, TIGRa, that is easier to deliver into the body. In mice, they used it to prevent blindness from retinal injury.

Meet the Moss Lab at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford. 👁️ 🧠

The Moss Lab sits right at the intersection of neurology and ophthalmology. Led by physician-scientist Dr. Heather Moss, the team focuses on diagnosing and treating complex visual conditions originating in the brain, such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), optic neuritis, and multiple sclerosis. By developing new diagnostic tools and discovering biological indicators, her lab works to catch optic nerve damage early, track disease progression, and protect patients' sight.

Beyond patient care, Dr. Moss personally mentors international visiting scholars who travel from around the world to train in her lab. Through partnering with global researchers, the Moss Lab combines international clinical perspectives with cutting-edge tools like artificial intelligence to make specialized neuro-ophthalmic care accessible worldwide.

A new study co-authored by Drs. Yang Sun and Zhiquan Liu introduces TIGRa, an ultra-compact gene activation platform about one-third the size of conventional systems that allows researchers to target multiple genes at once. 👏

This breakthrough overcomes major delivery size limits in gene therapy, opening exciting doors for treating complex diseases in vision, neuroscience, and beyond. Learn more: https://buff.ly/WDw7oUm

A group of brilliant Byers Eye Institute physicians showed out at the Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) 2026 Summer Symposium in Monterey, CA! ☀️

WIO brings together some of the brightest minds in the specialty and allows attendees to explore the latest ophthalmic breakthroughs, participate in hands-on workshops, and connect through lively networking events. Some Stanford highlights from this year's symposium:
💉 Dr. Andrea Kossler (WIO vice president) presented on diagnosing and assessing thyroid eye disease, updates on live toxins and fillers, and led a live injectable oculofacial education session.
🎤 Dr. Sophia Wang presented on the current use of AI in ophthalmology.
