Summer

It’s summer. The kids are out of school, the days are long, and the temperatures are warm. During this time of year many of us are more active, especially outdoors. Below are some simple and easy things you can do to stay safe while enjoying the beautiful summer weather.

-Make yourself unattractive to bugs. Use bug spray and avoid areas of standing water.
-Wear sunscreen and use sun glasses.
-If going hiking or camping make sure you have first aid supplies.
-Practice water safety: never swim alone, use a life vest if not a strong swimmer, wear a brightly colored bathing suit, and swim in areas with lifeguards when possible.
-Stay hydrated to prevent heat stress and heat stroke.
-Know your bad plants, like poison ivy.
-Wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, bike, or scooter.

We have a couple things happening this summer.
First: Pound will be offered on Monday evenings at 4:45PM starting NEXT Monday.
Second: The Summertime Challenge is back. The challenge runs June 1-August 31.

Ever wonder why your favorite foods change as you get older? Join Extension on Thursday, June 11 at 10:30 a.m. at LiveWell - Pana Community Hospital to explore the five basic tastes—sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami—and learn how your palate evolves throughout life.

We’ll dive into how smell and taste work together, why aging affects flavor, and even the psychology behind what we like to eat. Plus, get tips on making food taste better using color and spices!

Register by calling LiveWell Fitness at (217) 562-6231 or by signing up at the fitness center's front desk. You can also email [email protected]. This class will take place in the Community Meeting Room (lower level) at Pana Community Hospital.

Ticks

Given the warmer temperatures and longer days, most people will be spending more time outside. It’s important to be safe when outside and that includes being aware of ticks. Ticks are tiny little bugs that latch on to people and animals. Unfortunately, they can carry disease so it’s important to be aware and take precautions. Ticks can live anywhere outside but are especially prevalent in woody and grassy areas. Even though it’s early in the summer season, ticks are already out in full force.

Check out the following tips to enjoy the outdoors while protecting yourself from ticks.
-Cover exposed skin. Ticks can’t bite you if they can’t reach you.
-Use bug spray containing EPA approved tick repellant chemicals.
-Shower as soon as possible after coming inside.
-Thoroughly check your body for ticks. They are tiny and they could bite you anywhere.
-Put the clothes you wore outside in a hot dryer for 10 minutes to kill any pests that hitched a ride on your clothes.
-If you find a tick, don’t panic! Remove the tick with a pair of tweezers.

Don’t let a bug stop you from enjoying summer!
