Remember when a dose of castor oil fixed everything? 🤢
As a kid, if I had a headache, felt cranky, or even looked a little “off,” my grandma was ready with a dose of castor oil. I learned real quick to hide any sign of sickness.
But my grandma? She was truly the saint of grandmas. Meek, loving, good, and full of wisdom. I’ve always said if only one person was allowed into heaven, it would have been her.
She could cook, too. A dash of this, a pinch of that, and usually a whole lot of butter and sugar. Funny how that works, isn’t it? The things we’re often told to avoid now were part of everyday life then. Yet she lived 89 years, and for most of those years, she lived without the aches and pains so many of us wake up with now.
So I often wonder, what did she do differently?
She ate what the earth provided. Fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh-caught fish from family. Simple meals. Real food. She knew how to stretch a leftover cup of mashed potatoes into a whole new meal because she had lived through hard times and learned how to make something out of almost nothing.
Many of us carry memories like that. The way our grandparents cooked. The way they cleaned. The things they reached for when someone was sick.
Back in the day, many remedies were believed to be “the only way.” Some were definitely not ones we’d recommend today, and we are thankful for the medical advances we have now. But some old-time remedies were rooted in real wisdom, nourishment, and care, and many are still being used today.
So for a little while, we want to hear from you.
We’ll be sharing different old-time remedies and wellness traditions, and we want to know what you remember from “the good 'ol days.”
To kick it off:
Tell us about a grandparent, elder, or loved one who left a positive impression on you.
Then tell us an old remedy you remember for a cold. It may be something they used, something your family still does, or something you just remember hearing about.
We can’t wait to read your stories.
Stay tuned, because Angel has some homemade “nature-made Tamiflu” and a few other old-time health remedies we’ll be talking about soon.
As always, this is for conversation and education only. Old remedies can be meaningful, but they should never replace medical care when it’s needed.
