What if your cynicism isn't a character flaw?

What if it's your brain trying to cope with a job that constantly asks you to care deeply while giving you very little control over the problems you're trying to solve?

As Anthony Correia writes:

“We were calibrated for a clinical war that rarely came, leaving us vulnerable to learned helplessness. Disenchantment led to apathy and cynicism. Turns out, much of this job is facing issues you can do nothing about.”

That hits differently after a few years on the truck.

The endless calls. The repeat patients. The system problems you can't fix. The sleep deprivation. The feeling that you're checking boxes instead of actually solving problems.

And then there's the station gripe session. It feels good for a minute, but Correia argues that even that can become part of the cycle.

“We think cynicism protects us; instead, it leaves us in a cycle of negativity.”

Cynicism doesn't necessarily mean you stopped caring.

Sometimes it means you cared for a very long time without having enough control, recovery, or support.

Flex Grant Team Site Visit! This marks the upcoming end of year 2 of this 5 year project. We have focused on leadership, recruitment/retention, employee and stakeholders surveys, social media, and a work plan. The next year will be a focus on policies, procedures, public survey, public meetings and education, and strategic planning. We appreciate the guidance and opportunity from the Michigan Center for Rural Health and Cambridge Consulting. So much knowledge and experience in this group! Thank you! Team member Ali took the photo at lunch at the Wheelhouse Diner & Goat Locker Saloon!
