On Friday May 22nd, I attended a Memorial Day Remembrance Event held by Phoenix Indian Center at Steele Indian School Park where I was asked to sing the national anthem.

The event consisted of many speakers who actively take part in assisting our veterans in the Phoenix area. The keynote speaker was Melissa Tennant who talked about what led up to her enlisting in the Air Force. The event ended with a wreath laying ceremony to honor all those that lost their life in service. I want to thank for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to have a part in their program.

Memorial Day is more than just a holiday, it is a time for us to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in order for us to enjoy the freedoms that we hold. Today, families gather across the nation to carry forth the memories of those who did not return home. We are grateful to those who continue their service around the world. I hope you have a safe Memorial Day as we will never forget the strength and courage of those who answered the call of service for our nation. Sapo!

On Wednesday May 20th, I attended the Salt River Elementary School 6th grade promotion ceremony held in the ALA Lecture Hall.

I was so grateful to be one of the keynote speakers and address both the students and their families. I spoke about how the transition from elementary school to middle school can be difficult but change is what makes us grow. I thanked all the families that came to support their students and encouraged them to keep showing up. To end, I told the students to keep learning and to dream big as they can accomplish whatever they set their heart and minds too with the full support of their families and community. I was also invited on stage to shake the hands of each student as they received their certificates. The ceremony ended with the students dancing and singing to The Going Home song.

I want to thank for inviting me and giving me a special part in their program. As a former student of SRES it was so heartwarming to be able to come back and speak to our future leaders and to see the growth and support they have. To the future class of 2032 I wish you all the best of luck on your journey, we are all so proud of you and we cannot wait to see everything you accomplish. Sapo!

On Wednesday May 13th, I attended the 2026 Maricopa Community College District’s American Indian Convocation held at Salt River Fields.

The program started with the posting of the colors and I was asked the sing the national anthem. Following motivational words from several tribal leaders were 3 student speakers representing Pascua Yaqui, Navajo Nation, and SRPMIC. After was a performance by Bird Singing and Dancing By the River who shared their songs and dances with all present. Graduates then were called to walk across the stage as they were acknowledged for their dedication. Miss Native Mesa Community College and myself gave each graduate a shell necklace provided by the organizers as a small gift. To end were fireworks to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of all those who graduated!

I want to thank SRPMIC Community Relations Office for inviting me and giving me a part in such a special ceremony for our indigenous scholars. This ceremony was made possible with the collaboration of several tribal nations, as well as MCCD faculty and staff. I would like to congratulate the class of 2026 and I wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavors. Sapo!

Yá’át’ééh! ✨

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the Mesa Public Schools American Indian Celebration, which brought together graduating seniors from across the Mesa Public Schools district to celebrate their accomplishments. The event honored Native American students and featured beautiful performances by singers and dancers representing various tribal communities.

The keynote speaker, former Miss Indian Arizona Audriana Mitchell, delivered a meaningful message about resilience and encouraging yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. It was an inspiring evening that I hold especially close to my heart, as two of my younger cousins are among this year’s graduates and were recognized during the celebration.

As we continue through this season of celebrating our graduates, I would also like to extend my best wishes to all students as they begin new chapters in their lives. May your journeys be filled with growth, opportunity, and many blessed experiences that continue to shape you into individuals who make your families and communities proud.

Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2026 🎉

On Saturday May 9th, I attended Elders Day held at Desert Diamond Casino on the Tohono O’odham Nation.

All of the royalty in attendance were asked to greet the elders as they arrived and to mingle throughout the day. It was a great morning getting to meet some of the elders and hear their stories. I want to thank the event organizers for inviting me as it warmed my heart to be surrounded by all the elders in attendance and to hear them laughing and joking with one another. Sapo!

On Thursday May 7th, I attended culture week at Rice Intermediate School held on the San Carlos Apache Tribe.

I was invited to be one of the presenters during the 5th grade rotations. I shared a bit of history and information about my role as Miss Indian Arizona and about my community. I was also asked to share my platform which is “Strengthening Cultural Learning in our Youth through Traditional Singing and Dancing”. I shared a couple of my favorite songs with the students and encouraged them to participate in their culture. It was amazing to see all the students that dressed in their traditional wear and participated in all of the different activities throughout the week.

I want to thank Rice Intermediate School for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to speak with the youth. Culture week is a way for students to not only get exposure to their traditional teachings but to celebrate the beautful culture they carry through language, song, and dance. Sapo!

On Tuesday May 5th, I attended Missing and Murder Indigenous People Awareness Day event held at the Arizona State Capitol.

In attendance were tribal members from all across the state of Arizona and different organizations that were formed to help our indigenous people. I was invited to share some words with all those present and give my gratitude to all those who are fighting for recognition for our missing relatives. The event ended with a march around the State Capitol plaza and a song by Red Nation Women Drum.

May 5th is a day to honor all of those that we lost and those who are still waiting to be found. We hold their memories close as we continue to bring awareness to atrocities happening in our communities. As indigenous people, we experience violence at a much higher rate than any other group in the country but by bringing awareness and recognition we are hopeful to see changes in our communities.

I want to thank the organizers for inviting me and for giving me an opportunity to share a message. It was great to see everyone come together to help bring awareness to MMIP and to create a space of healing. It was a heavy day but with the different calls for action and awareness events across Arizona I’m hopeful for our future generations. Sapo!

On Thursday April 30th I attended the Soft Opening for the Kavaḍ/Kushov Cultural Center located in my hometown of Salt River. Invited were community partners and leadership. The Salt River Traditional Dancers and Bird Singing and Dancing by The River shared O’odham and Piipaash dancing with all those present.

On Saturday May 2nd, I attended the grand opening for the Kavaḍ/Kushov Cultural Center. The morning started with a ribbon cutting ceremony and following was a short program where we got to hear from tribal leadership. Cultural Resources Director Kelly Washington also shared some words and history of the cultural center and how this is a new chapter for our community. Afterwards, attendees were served breakfast and were encouraged to take a self guided tour through the new facility. To end, was social O’odham and Piipaash dancing.

Prior to being the Kavaḍ/Kushov Cultural Center, this building was previously the Salt River Day School. While there were both good and bad memories, it’s great that the building was repurposed as an area for cultural learning. The new facility houses Cultural Resources staff, classrooms, and spaces for cultural activities. The dual name Kavaḍ/Kushov was to honor the 2 tribes that reside in Salt River with Kavaḍ being in O’odham and Kushov in Piipaash. Kavaḍ/Kushov means “shield” to also honor the logo representing our Cultural Resource department.

I want to thank for inviting me and letting me be apart of this very special day for our community. The new center gives an even greater opportunity for our community members to learn more about who we are as O’odham and Piipaash and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for our future generations. Sapo!
