For years, coffee research has focused on caffeine, sleep, and heart health. But this study asked a different question: does the way we brew our coffee influence how we age?

Researchers found that filtered coffee was associated with slower biological aging, whereas higher intakes of instant coffee were associated with the opposite pattern. The differences appeared to track with markers related to inflammation, metabolism, and kidney function.

Of course, coffee is not universally beneficial. Genetics, hormone status, stress, sleep quality, and even the gut microbiome all shape how each of us responds. Some people thrive with coffee, while others feel more anxious, wired, or depleted. It’s a reminder that nutrition is deeply personal. The goal isn’t to decide whether coffee is “good” or “bad,” but to understand how your own body receives it.

What has your relationship with coffee taught you?

It started with a chair.

A few weeks later, my home feels completely different.

So do I.

Can a sense of purpose help protect the aging brain?

A new study of 1,179 women aged 77–93 years followed for more than 5 years found that psychological well-being may play an important role in cognitive health.

Key findings:
• Women with the highest levels of personal growth had a 33% lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment or dementia.
• A stronger sense of purpose in life was also linked to better cognitive outcomes.
• Much of the benefit appeared to occur through two modifiable pathways: lower perceived stress and higher levels of physical activity.
• Interestingly, life satisfaction alone was not associated with cognitive impairment risk.

The takeaway? Healthy aging isn't just about what happens physically. Continuing to learn, grow, find meaning, stay active, and manage stress may be important ingredients for protecting brain health as we age.

Perhaps one of the most powerful questions we can ask ourselves is not simply, "How long will I live?" but "What gives my life purpose today?"
